The Basics
Michael Counes is the Director of Addiction Services at The Palms Detox, a residential substance abuse treatment and detox facility in West Palm Beach, Florida. A Board Registered Interventionist Level II (BRI-II), a Certified Addictions Professional (CIP), a Certified Gambling Addiction Counselor (CGAC) and a certified mental health professional, Counes also has a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services/Addiction Studies and a Master’s in Organizational Management and Leadership.
Services at The Palms Detox include medically supervised detox as well as interventions, sober coaching and family advisers, all overseen or performed by Counes. In addition to treating individuals and families, Counes and staff provide specialized services for executives and professionals as well as elite athletes.
The Background
Counes has over 16 years of experience in the field of addiction with extensive education and a variety of different specialties. In the past he has worked at both non-profit as well as private treatment facilities, gaining experience and knowledge as an addiction specialist and an interventionist.
The Approach
Counes meets with the family, colleagues or loved ones of the client to prepare them for the intervention as well as to develop an individualized plan depending on the client’s unique needs. Counes typically implements the ARISE model for interventions, but is knowledgeable on a range of alternate methods should it be determined that another would yield more desirable results. In addition to the invitational ARISE method, Counes and Palms Detox staff can also implement confrontational, medical or legal detox as needed.
Following the intervention, the client is admitted into detox followed by an appropriate treatment program. Although Counes does not himself provide sober companionship, he assists the client in finding support and provides case management as he or she progresses through treatment.
