The Basics
Located in Dayton, Ohio, Miami Valley Hospital Behavioral Services provides treatment for mental health and substance abuse. In the late 1970s, the hospital created Turning Point, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults. Through this service, clients are able to participate in a mixture of education, group and individual therapy. Throughout the recovery process, staff offers individualized attention to enhance each client’s success.
Treatment and Staff
Clients must go through the intake process before entering a program. The intake includes both physical and psychological evaluations and determines the appropriate level of care. Support for dual diagnosis is available. Detox is not provided on-site, so clients who require this service are referred to another facility.
The 10-week intensive outpatient program offers treatment three times a week, for three hours at a time. The schedule includes group therapy, individual therapy at least once a week, family therapy once a week and education. Group topics include trauma, coping skills, relapse prevention, introduction to the 12 steps, family dynamics and anger management. Group sizes range from five to 15 people at a time. Evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT are used in both the group and individual settings. Educational lectures cover topics such as the addiction-as-a-disease model, as well as the physical dangers of long-term substance abuse. Clients are required to attend at least one 12 step meeting per week in the community and provide proof of attendance.
Once IOP has been completed, clients can step down into a more flexible outpatient schedule. This option includes all of the same services as IOP, just fewer hours per week. As stability is gained, treatment becomes less frequent.
The staff includes CADCs, Master’s-level therapists, medical doctors and a psychiatrist who specializes in co-occurring disorders.
Extras
Family members are encouraged to participate in the recovery process. Educational groups are available once a week, informing family members on coping skills, the science of addiction and healthy communication.
In Summary
Miami Valley Hospital’s Turning Point offers the traditional approach to outpatient treatment in a hospital setting. A major plus of this program is the access to highly-trained mental health professionals. Through support for co-occurring disorders such as depression and anxiety, clients are able to heal the mind and the body.
