Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Meta House is a non-profit organization that has provided substance abuse treatment services to women since 1963. Offering both residential and outpatient options, its outpatient division is built upon gender-responsive methodology.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient substance abuse treatment at Meta House is structured similarly to the programming in the residential track. Both are gender-responsive methodology; meaning that treatment is specialized towards the specific needs of women from a physical, social, cultural and psychological standpoint. The program is also based on a person-centered treatment model—each client has an individualized treatment plan. A counselor determines which treatment methods are best suited for each woman during her initial assessment. The programming includes group and individual counseling that provides a safe space for clients to reflect and explore the role of past trauma such as physical or emotional abuse, and how it affects their interpersonal relations and substance abuse issues today. A well-credentialed staff of SACs, LPCs, CSACs and social workers also incorporate life skills, educational and vocational services, health education, nutrition planning, parenting skills, mental health and relapse prevention techniques. Seeking Safety and smoking cessation groups are also available, as is child care.
Process groups are held everyday Monday through Friday at varying times. Other services may be scheduled between client and counselor accordingly. The length of the program is different for everyone and may be subject to change depending on the individual progress of each client.
The 12 steps are not included in the program but clients may be referred to local AA/NA chapters if requested. Meta House is fully equipped to treat women who also might be struggling with co-occurring disorders. The on-site psychiatrist is also an addictionologist specializing in the treatment of dual diagnosis clientele.
Meta House does not offer detox services at this time.
In addition to help with addiction, Meta House facilitates mental health services, trauma treatment, case management, child and family services, vocational/educational services and an award-winning transitional living program, aptly named Meta Housing.
The outpatient services offered at Meta House are an excellent option for women, especially mothers, seeking comprehensive substance abuse treatment that allows them to still live at home. The program offers a wide range of treatment options, a thorough medical component and individualized treatment plans, all elements that increase the chances for what is hopefully a solid foundation of long-term sobriety and recovery.
