Mesilla Valley Hospital Review
Mesilla Valley Hospital is a freestanding psychiatric hospital that has operated in Las Cruces, New Mexico since 1992. In addition to its mental health services, Mesilla Valley also offers detox and residential treatment programs for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. All therapy is grounded in evidence-based treatment with support of the 12-step recovery model. Clients at Mesilla Valley Hospital also engage in outdoor activities where they can enjoy the Southwest New Mexico year-round sunshine and the picturesque landscape of the Organ Mountains.
Accommodations and Food
Mesilla Valley has two locations, the North and South buildings; in this way substance abuse clients are kept separately from psychiatric patients. The detox and residential programs share a unit in the hospital, men and women on the same floor, with roommates of the same gender.
There are 27 beds available in total, half of which are filled regularly. The rooms are dorm-style, housing three clients at a time with en suite bathrooms. Clients may bring pillows and bed linens to make their rooms more comfortable, but they can’t bring cell phones, laptops or any personal electronics.
Meals are served out of the hospital cafeteria which offers a wide selection of food and salad bar at every meal.
Treatment and Staff
Clients at Mesilla Valley often start treatment in medical detox; this includes detoxing from alcohol and drugs including heroin, marijuana and prescription medications. After approximately five days, they begin treatment in the residential program. The residential program is 28 days long and is based on evidence-based treatment as well as trauma-informed care. Clients participate in individual, group and family therapy. Treatment modalities include CBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and art, music and recreational therapy.
Group topics include learning to identify and manage triggers and cravings, life skills training, relapse prevention and addiction education. Clients learn about 12-step philosophy in group and participate in on-site 12-step meetings multiple times during the week where they are encouraged to get sponsors. Step work is part of the treatment curriculum.
Mesilla Valley also offers specialty groups for men’s and women’s issues, veterans, co-occurring disorders and trauma.
The staff at Mesilla Valley is made up of psychiatrists, licensed therapists, psychiatric nurses, techs, caseworkers and a dietitian. There are two full time therapists on staff, one with a military background who specializes in PTSD.
Extras
The facility offers outdoor recreational activities including a ROPES course, volleyball, track and field, soccer and an indoor basketball court for group games. Clients engage in interactive journaling and as mentioned, art and music therapy. EMDR treatments are included in the cost of treatment.
As aftercare, clients are discharged with their own Relapse Prevention Plan.
In Summary
Mesilla Valley Hospital offers treatment and amenities similar in scope to what is offered at other facilities in this price range. Being that it is a psychiatric facility, it could be the place for someone who is struggling with a difficult dual diagnosis or trauma.
