Mercy DubuqueThe Basics

For over 30 years, Mercy Turning Point Treatment Center has offered outpatient substance abuse treatment in Dubuque, Iowa. Mercy Turning Point is a member of the region’s Mercy Hospital network, which was founded by a local order of Catholic nuns in 1879. Mercy also offers substance abuse treatment in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. Working in tandem with Mercy Psychiatric Services, Mercy Turning Point offers comprehensive dual diagnosis support. Mercy Psychiatric Services is the only full-service psychiatric facility in the Dubuque area.

Treatment and Staff

Mercy Turning Point offers outpatient treatment at both the standard outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) levels of care. Standard outpatient clients have group therapy once or twice a week and individual therapy as-needed. IOP clients have group therapy three times each week and individual therapy once a week or as-needed. Both morning and evening groups are offered. The duration of treatment depends on a client’s needs and progress, though most treatment plans last six to eight weeks. Clients can step down from the IOP to standard outpatient as their recovery progresses.

Due to the increasing epidemic of heroin use in the Dubuque area, Mercy Turning Point has launched an opiate addiction treatment initiative which includes Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Suboxone. Mercy has also held town hall meetings to address the epidemic and is in dialogue with other community agencies to further develop effective treatment options.

The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists such as LCSWs and MSWs and clients with co-occurring disorders may also work with a psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner for medication management. Therapy uses CBT, and the treatment team asks clients to attend at least one 12-step meeting each week.

Extras

Mercy Turning Point offers a family education group each month. For aftercare, clients who’ve completed their treatment plan can attend a weekly Wednesday relapse prevention group. It also provides a grief support group and is equipped to offer DOT evaluations.
