mercyThe Basics

Located in Jackson, Mississippi, Mercy Lodge is a women’s sober living facility for those who have successfully completed residential treatment. Set on seven serene acres, it is next door to the McCoy House sober living. When the property came up for sale, McCoy House owner Denise Marston teamed up with Sister Paulinus Oakes of the Sisters of Mercy to acquire it.

Mercy Lodge follows the 12-step philosophy, with clients required to attend up to five meetings per week while participating in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Through nurturing, gender-specific care, women at Mercy Lodge learn to lead independent lives.

Accommodations and Amenities

Residents at Mercy Lodge live in a ranch-style bungalow. Each bedroom is shared between two clients, featuring twin-sized beds and two dressers. Residents are provided with bedding, linens and towels. Four sizable bathrooms are each shared between two to three clients. The house can hold a maximum of 10 clients and also includes a spacious kitchen, a breakfast room, a meditation room and a cozy living room with a TV and fireplace. Wi-Fi, a private phone line, a full laundry room and ample parking are also included.

No meals are prepared here, as the women are taught to shop and cook for themselves. Meals are often cooked together as a group and the kitchen comes with all the necessary utensils, flatware and cleaning supplies.

The outdoor area of the home includes a porch, lounge chairs and a fountain. During free time, the women can get in a workout at a local gym. Temporary memberships are provided.

Rules and Regulations

To enroll at Mercy Lodge, all clients must successfully complete and come directly from residential treatment. All women are expected to stay a minimum of 90 days, although many end up staying for six months or more. Residents are also required to participate in Mercy Lodge’s IOP, which is held off-site.

During their time in the house, clients are expected to live harmoniously with each other, work the steps and stay sober at all times. Residents are subject to random drug and alcohol tests and must attend four to five AA/NA meetings per week, though both on- and off-site meetings are available. In certain circumstances, women are also allowed off-site, for example to go to local shops, grocery stores or the gym.

Weekly house meetings are mandatory. During this time, residents check in and discuss upcoming events and house projects. While the women can work or attend school, it is not mandatory. Smoking is permitted in certain outdoor areas around the home. Laptops and cellphones are also allowed.

In Summary

Mercy Lodge offers a quaint setting to take the next step in recovery after inpatient treatment. Thanks to the small number of clients and the home’s serene environment, it is a great choice for women looking to work on their sobriety. While the 12 steps are mandatory, those willing to work them will find a home here.
