Mental Healthcare of Cullman—or Cullman Area Mental Health Authority—is a non-profit agency serving the community of Cullman, Alabama. This outpatient facility, located about 50 miles north of Birmingham, offers treatment for addiction and co-occurring mental health issues.

MHC treats children, adolescents, adults and seniors with mental health issues and behavioral problems and also offers Transformations—an evidence-based Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for individuals struggling with substance abuse and addiction. MHC sustains operations with funding from the community, mental health grants, contracts and insurances.

Treatment and Staff

Following a complete intake assessment, therapists and clients develop individualized treatment plans together which are then given to the staff psychiatrist for approval. Upon admittance to MHC’s IOP, clients participate in three group sessions per week and psychoeducation one to two times per week. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled as-needed with assigned therapists.

The type of therapy used is based on each client’s needs, though most therapeutic work is CBT. The addiction program is 12-step oriented and staff encourages off-site AA/NA meeting attendance and sponsorship. There is no specified length of time for treatment, as each client progresses in their recovery at their own pace.

MHC staff includes therapists, case managers, a psychiatrist and mental health technicians. The staff psychiatrist provides medication management and dual-diagnosis support. Mental health techs help clients reach their treatment goals and teach money management, coping skills and general housekeeping.

Extras

MHC offers family education, community outreach and training services, drug screening and can accommodate individuals with special circumstances—such as pregnant women and clients who are IV drug users.

The Partners in Parenting classes focus on positive discipline approaches, effective communicating and special guidance techniques. This program lasts for 10 sessions.

In Summary

Cost of treatment is a sliding-scale determined by each client’s income (there are no additional fees for classes, individual sessions or psychiatric appointments), making MHC an affordable IOP option for individuals experiencing financial hardship.

While this program is not ideally suited for those who are opposed to the 12-step approach, it does provide ample staff and program support for clients with co-occurring disorders. Those who don’t want to commit to an inpatient program but who are dealing with both substance abuse and mental health issues are treated by a psychiatrist who provides oversight from intake through completion of the program. With special considerations for parents and expectant mothers, MHC is committed to the whole family system when it comes to recovery.
