The Basics
As the only private practice in Memphis, Tennessee, that offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for psychiatric and substance abuse related problems Mental Health Resources (MHR) offers an alternative to hospitalization for clients who face mental illness and addiction issues. Their specialized dual diagnosis IOP is the only substance abuse treatment offering—to be eligible clients must have a mental illness diagnosis. The facility specializes in mental health issues, and uses a wide range of evidence-based practices.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Mental Health Recources begins with a through psychological assessment and survey regarding substance abuse. The length of treatment is determined based on the frequency, type and amount of substances used. Based on the initial evaluation, the counselor will work with the client to develop an individualized treatment plan. The 12 steps and other self-help groups are not a part of treatment on-site. Detox is not available, but referrals will be made if the assessment indicates that medical care as needed.
Clients attend individual therapy on a weekly basis and group sessions three times a week, from 9 am to 12 pm. Four major areas are addressed in treatment: addiction awareness and education, the development of constructive coping skills, the ability to deal with difficult emotions and the management of physical symptoms. To address these issues, group sessions use Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), the Stages of Change Model and CBT. Also covered in groups are psychoeducation, assertiveness training, anger management, crisis skills, dealing with grief, implementing boundaries in relationships, problem solving and relapse prevention.
There are several psychiatrists on staff available to clients for dual diagnosis support and medication management. Frequency of psychiatric sessions depends on each client. In addition to psychiatrists, the staff includes a LCSW, a psychologist, and a MFT. The size of the groups varies throughout the year, but typically averages around ten participants.
Extras
At MHR, crisis intervention and urgent appointments are available if a client is in a dangerous situation, the staff at the facility will see them immediately.
In addition to the dual diagnosis IOP, psychiatric IOP is available for those dealing with just mental health issues. Family therapy, individual therapy and couples therapy are also offered on the premises.
