The Basics
Established in 1984, Mental Health Providers of Western Queens, Inc. (MHPWQ) offers a wide variety of mental health treatment programs. With a goal of improving the quality of clients’ lives and embracing cultural diversity, the organization has contributed much to the community of Western Queens. In addition to serving the community with mental health needs, including those of school children and immigrants, MHPWQ is committed to helping people overcome substance abuse problems. The outpatient recovery facility is located in Woodside and has been helping people beat addiction for over 25 years. Staff members of the program work with justice service providers and community leaders to help addicts on their journeys toward recovery.
Treatment and Staff
The length of treatment depends on each client’s needs and his/her ability to maintain abstinence though it typically lasts between three months to a year. The bulk of treatment takes place in groups, and several different types of groups are offered, including those that use CBT and DBT, and sessions that focus on anger management, coping skills and vocational classes. On-site 12-step meetings are held regularly and clients with co-occurring disorders have access to an on-site psychiatrist. One-on-one counseling is offered once or twice a week depending on the client’s need. For those with co-occurring disorders, comprehensive psychiatric evaluations are given, and medication management is ongoing throughout treatment. Urine tests are taken at random.
Staff members include licensed social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, drug and alcohol counselors and psychiatrists. Each client has his/her own counselor and access to an on-site psychiatrist.
Extras
Smoking cessation support groups and vocational counseling groups are available for clients, along with a program specifically designed for teens.
