The Mental Health Center of DenverThe Basics

The Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) was created in Colorado in 1989, when four local mental health centers merged to provide several levels of psychiatric care to the residents of Denver County. While MHCD specializes in treating clients with significant mental health disorders, its Recovery Center also provides outpatient treatment for addicts with co-occurring disorders. In addition to outpatient treatment, MHCD operates supportive living apartments and provides clients with pharmacy services and job training programs.

Treatment and Staff

Substance abuse clients must have a mental health diagnosis in to their addiction. After an intake session, clients receive a short-term treatment plan of eight sessions of individual or group therapy. After the initial eight sessions, an additional treatment plan is developed, further focusing the client’s therapy groups and medication. The duration of treatment depends on a client’s needs, progress and motivation.

The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists, including LCSWs, LMFTs and LPCs, addiction counselors CACs and LACs and psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses. Therapy groups use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients identify triggers and develop coping skills. MHCD also has an ongoing DBT group that some clients may be referred to. Twelve-step meetings and other peer support groups may be recommended as well.

Extras

MHCD has a vocational training program for clients seeking employment. Its extensive case management services can help clients coordinate medical care and locate housing. MCHD also offers therapy to children, and parents may be brought in to a child’s treatment if the treatment team thinks its in the child’s best interests. MHCD employs a Director of Faith and Spiritual Inclusiveness to train employees on accommodating clients’ spiritual lives.
