The Basics
In 2006, MedTech began providing outpatient substance abuse services in western Pennsylvania, an area that has been hit particularly hard by the recent opioid addiction epidemic. MedTech was founded by medical entrepreneur Marc D. Roup and attorney Thomas Plaitano. It currently operates two locations, in Greensburg and Blairsville, near Pittsburgh.
MedTech provides Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) by administering Suboxone and methadone which clients combine with either a standard outpatient track or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). While the outpatient programs treat those suffering from abuse of alcohol and other substances, MedTech specializes in the treatment of opioid addicts.
Treatment and Staff
Clients who are seeking MAT for opioid addiction must demonstrate at least one year of addiction prior to receiving treatment and can be treated with either methadone or Suboxone. In addition to receiving their doses at the clinic, clients receive random drug tests at least twice a month. Clients in this program must also attend group therapy as well as individual therapy for a minimum of two-and-a-half hours each month.
Clients enrolled in the IOP attend group therapy three times a week and individual counseling once a week. Those in standard outpatient attend group therapy just once or twice a week and individual counseling as-needed. Group sessions in both outpatient programs as well as the MAT track primarily use CBT skills to help clients develop coping mechanisms and learn how to handle triggers. The duration of each program is progress-based allowing clients to step down to a less intense track or attend sessions less frequently as they maintain sobriety.
MedTech does not require clients to attend peer support meetings such as 12-step groups. While co-occurring disorders can be addressed in group and individual counseling, clients needing dual diagnosis support attend treatment at nearby mental health clinics.
