Located in Washington, D.C., MedStar Washington Hospital Center offers outpatient treatment for chemical dependency and mental health issues. Founded in 1958, this nonprofit hospital is the largest in the nation’s capital. The aim of this program is to provide high quality treatment that is accessible to those from all walks of life.
Treatment and Staff
Washington Hospital offers two levels of care—Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and outpatient. Prior to entering either program, each client must undergo an initial assessment that determines which level of care is needed or if referrals should be made to another facility for detox or residential treatment. Dual diagnosis support is available for those who struggle with addiction and issues such as depression and anxiety.
The IOP program meets three times a week, for three-hour sessions. This track includes a mixture of group and individual therapy and evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT. The outpatient track requires less of a time commitment, meeting once a week for three hours. This program also includes group therapy and one individual counseling session.
Group topics include relapse prevention, early recovery, coping skills and anger management. One-on-one therapy provides dual diagnosis support and individualized attention. The 12 steps are briefly discussed during group therapy and while clients are not required to attend meetings outside of the program, it is suggested. There is no formal family program, but loved ones can sit in on individual counseling sessions, when needed.
Washington Hospital’s staff of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, clinical counselors and community support workers work in teams with each client to provide multi-disciplinary care.
Washington Hospital collaborates with physicians, therapists, family members and community organizations, as appropriate, to establish a network of care for clients. They work with client’s primary care doctors or therapists, help them find affordable housing, and provide resources to help them pursue their education or find jobs.
Medstar Washington Hospital Center provides a structured and safe environment for recovery. With support for co-occurring issues, clients are able to attack both addiction and mental health struggles head on. Overall, this program offers an affordable, traditional outpatient schedule in a medical setting.
