Medstar Montgomery Medical Center Review
Located in Olney, Maryland, about 20 miles north of Washington, D.C., Medstar Montgomery Medical Center was founded by Dr. Jacob Wheeler Bird in 1918. Acquired almost 100 years later—in 2008—by Medstar Health, MMMC today offers an array of services in an acute care hospital, including a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), medical detox, and outpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs for those struggling with substance abuse.
Treatment and Staff
In their IOP, MMMC offers group therapy treatment from 6 pm to 8 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Clients participate in 12-step oriented groups. Typically, this program is 30 to 60 days in length. While there is no CBT, EMDR is available for trauma-based clients. An on-staff psychiatrist supervises all staff members (but does not have direct contact with clients) as well as the inpatient medical detox program.
For clients seeking dual diagnosis support, group meetings with a focus on co-occurring disorders are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm.
Attendance at NA/AA meetings attendance is required in this program. Clients are responsible for going to meetings on their own as MMMC does not host on-site meetings. Clients must attend three meetings per week, with sponsorship highly recommended. If a client’s therapist deems it necessary, family sessions are arranged.
For the IOP, two therapists lead group meetings with a staff-to-client ratio varying from one-to-five to one-to-10. All core personnel are LADCs.The outpatient clinic is open from 9 am to 6 pm and group meetings tend to run longer than office hours.
In addition to the adult IOP, MMMC provides substance abuse IOPs for senior citizens and adolescents, with group meetings three days a week as well as dual diagnosis support with medication management.
For those needing some minimal inpatient care, Medstar offers a partial hospitalization program consisting of groups that meet seven days a week.
Extras
In addition to addiction recovery, MMMC also has a Crisis Evaluation Unit that offers support for clients in “emotional/behavioral and drug/alcohol crisis.”
