Meadville Medical CenterMeadville Medical Center: Stepping Stones Review

Meadville Medical Center is a community health system with multiple locations in northwestern Pennsylvania. Meadville Medical has been in operation for over 25 years and offers both residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment in its Stepping Stones unit. Stepping Stones is located in a hospital facility in Meadville, a small town 90 miles north of Pittsburgh. Stepping Stones offers a three to 10 day detox and is able to treat clients in need of dual diagnosis support by partnering with the hospital’s mental health treatment team.

Accommodations and Food

Clients have roommates in standard hospital rooms that feature TVs. The unit also has a recreation lounge with TV, games and art supplies. While Meadville is a locked facility that prohibits residents from taking walks on the grounds, the unit does have an exercise room. Personal electronics are not permitted in treatment but residents can use the unit phones to call home on weekends. Residents who need to make calls to employers, landlords and childcare providers can do so during the week under staff supervision.

The hospital cafeteria serves standard American fare and can accommodate food allergies and preferences. All meals and snacks are brought to the unit throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

Upon admittance to the program, residents have a full bio-psycho-social assessment. Those in need of detox stay under close supervision in detox rooms for three to 10 days, depending on the substance they’re detoxing from. Once they enter residential treatment—which lasts for a maximum of 28 days—clients have group and individual therapy each day starting at 8 am. Clients have several treatment groups each day, including processing groups that teach CBT skills and psychoeducation groups on the disease of addiction. All clients have individual therapy at least once a week. Full dual diagnosis support is provided to clients with mental health diagnoses that require medication and additional therapy.

Meadville encourages clients to use the 12-step framework while in treatment and transports residents to daily off-site AA and NA meetings. In the evenings clients have time to do step work and relax, and are expected to return to their rooms by 9 pm.

The treatment team is comprised of RNs, psychiatrists and Master’s-level therapists including LMSWs.

Extras

Clients can have family members visit on Sundays after they participate in a family education group. For aftercare, many residential clients choose to continue treatment in Stepping Stones’ outpatient program.

In Summary

Meadville Medical Center’s Stepping Stones unit provides the residents of northwestern Pennsylvania with an established residential treatment program that features comprehensive evidence-based therapy, dual diagnosis support and exposure to the 12 step framework. By providing family education, off-site AA/NA meetings and the opportunity to continue in its outpatient program, clients can leave treatment with improved support networks and a structured aftercare plan.
