Meadville Medical Center is a community health system with multiple locations in northwestern Pennsylvania. Meadville Medical has been in operation for over 25 years and offers detox, residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment in its Stepping Stones unit. Stepping Stones is located in a hospital facility in Meadville, a small town 90 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Stepping Stones is able to treat outpatient clients in need of dual diagnosis support by partnering with the hospital’s mental health treatment team. It also offers family education groups and an Employee Assistance Program for those needing treatment to return to work.
Treatment and Staff
Upon admittance to the program, residents have a full bio-psycho-social assessment and then are given a treatment plan that includes group therapy, usually twice a week, and weekly individual therapy. The duration of treatment is usually eight to 16 weeks, but clients may stay for up to a year.
Groups use CBT to help clients learn coping skills and relapse prevention techniques. They also explore relationship skills, recovery issues and the disease of addiction. Medication management and additional therapy is available to clients who need treatment for co-occurring disorders. Meadville encourages clients to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings, such as SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery, in addition to therapy.
The treatment team at Stepping Stones includes RNs, psychiatrists and Master’s-level therapists including LMSWs.
Stepping Stones has three weekly family education groups that clients’ loved ones are encouraged to attend. Family counseling is also available for those who wish to participate. For aftercare, clients work with their primary counselor to make a plan that may include on-going individual therapy and peer support meetings.
Meadville Medical Center’s Stepping Stones unit provides the residents of northwest Pennsylvania with a responsive, evidence-based outpatient program that includes family education and dual diagnosis support. Clients can work with their treatment team to determine the length of their stay, ensuring they have the time and support to successfully integrate treatment into their daily life in recovery.
