McLean Cottage Review
Opened in 2014, McLean Borden Cottage is a luxury alcohol and drug facility located in a hilltop estate in Camden on the Maine coast. The 16,000 square-foot colonial home sits on 13.8 acres, with panoramic views of Penobscot Bay. As part of McLean Hospital in Massachusetts, the rehab is staffed with Harvard Medical School-affiliated clinicians specializing in psychology, psychopharmacology and dual diagnosis treatment. The cottage boasts many amenities, with everything from yoga to art classes to a built-in bowling alley.
The newly-opened rehab is also a component of McLean’s internationally recognized Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, which has over 100 years’ experience in addiction. The estate has a provisional license that ensures its operation through November 25, 2015; if it receives positive reviews, the license will extend. The program offers 30-day or longer lengths of stay.
Accommodations and Food
Clients at Borden Cottage stay in one of eight large private bedrooms, all of which feature queen beds, ocean views and adjoining bathrooms. There’s a stately dining room along with many other communal areas including sitting rooms and comfortable living rooms. The home is decorated in a soothing and classy contemporary style, and meals are prepared by chefs from the nearby Relais & Châteaux Hotel.
Treatment and Staff
This facility includes medication evaluation and management, in addition to many types of psychological therapies, all performed under the supervision of Harvard Medical School-affiliated practitioners trained in substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. Borden Cottage designs individualized treatment plans for each resident to ensure that all mental, physical and spiritual aspects of their addiction are addressed. Interested clients can also participate in 12-step programs.
Therapy is offered one-on-one and in small groups, with approaches including CBT, DBT, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy. In addition to specialized treatment plans at the cottage, residents plan detailed aftercare programs and post-discharge strategies to ensure continued sobriety. The program is intensive, and runs seven days a week.
Trained addiction and mental health professionals are on-site at all times, with an average of 30 staff members working at the estate during the day. There’s also a doctor who remains on-call at all times.
Extras
The estate has a separate activities building complete with a four-lane bowling alley, a billiard room, an arcade and a 50’s style diner. Also available are a library, a heated swimming pool, guest cottages, a movie theater and a beauty salon. Residents can also play tennis and go skiing locally.
Aside from psychiatric and addiction treatment, clients participate in mind and body recovery through yoga, customized fitness and nutrition plans. For treatment extras, smoking cessation plans, art and music therapy and family programs are also available.
