The Basics
McKenna Recovery Center offers outpatient services and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at three facilities in Hawaii. Ke Ala Pono-Kauai was established in 1989, followed by Ke Ala Pono-Hilo in 1999 and, in 2004, the Honolulu Professionals Program was founded on Oahu. Their mission is to help adolescents and adults who suffer from chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders restore their health by pursuing “the right path” (ke ala pono).
Treatment and Staff
Upon admission, clients receive comprehensive assessments. Out-of-pocket intake cost is $200. Treatment length varies per client’s needs and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) including Suboxone is provided, if needed.
McKenna Recovery Center employs CBT and motivational interviewing during treatment. IOP includes individual therapy, group therapy, family programming and substance abuse education, and group topics include relapse prevention, family issues and dual diagnosis support.
Ke Ala Pono-Hilo has gender-specific protocols for adults and adolescents, as well as “The Working Person’s Track,” which offers evening treatment groups for busy clients with full-time jobs. Ke Ala Pono-Kauai’s IOP includes substance abuse lectures on Mondays, gender-specific groups on Tuesdays, relapse prevention group on Wednesdays and a family group on Fridays. The Hilo and Kauai groups tend to be large, with a minimum of 10 clients. The monthly out-of-pocket cost for the Kauai and Hilo IOPs is $5,000.
The Honolulu outpatient program caters to professionals or graduate students. Typically, business professionals, pilots, lawyers, physicians, flight attendants, and medical or law students make up the client roster. Weekly treatment includes individual therapy (per client’s needs) and three group sessions that meet at 5 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Out-of-pocket cost for the Honolulu program is between $7,500 and $10,000.
The treatment team includes Dr. Gerald McKenna, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist, who serves as medical director, a board registered interventionist, three Master’s-level certified substance abuse counselors and several Master’s-level social workers.

McKenna Recovery Center provides intervention services for families, as well as referrals to inpatient rehabs.

McKenna Recovery Center is a highly credentialed facility for those who need medication-assisted treatment on an outpatient basis. The variety of tracks and schedules available caters to the needs of a diverse group of people. For clients desiring a 12-step approach, this may not be the right fit.
