Danbury ConnecticutThe Basics

Founded in 1972 in Danbury, Connecticut, Midwestern Connecticut Council on Alcoholism (MCCA) offers a variety of addiction treatment services, including residential treatment programs at Trinity Glen Sharon for men and Trinity Glen Kent for women. Besides inpatient care, MCCA provides Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), outpatient treatment and sober living for clients. MCCA operates six outpatient locations in Danbury, Waterbury, New Milford, Derby, Torrington and New Haven.

Treatment and Staff

Potential clients at MCCA undergo a comprehensive 90-minute assessment with staff, and receive individualized treatment plans. Medical detox may be recommended, and if so, MCCA offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT), using Vivitrol and suboxone. Clients can also call ahead of time, and specifically request a detox screening. At MCCA, an evidence-based protocols, including DBT, is utilized, and there is an emphasis on treating co-occurring disordersMedication management with a psychiatrist is provided for those seeking dual diagnosis support.

The IOP meets three times weekly, for three hours, and is comprised of group therapy. Individual therapy is offered weekly, or more often according to the client’s needs. There is a co-ed morning group, which meets from nine am to 12:15 pm, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Groups range between 10 and 15 clients. During the first half, the entire group participates in psycho-education. After a break, clients are divided into two groups.  The second half of group is therapeutic based. Discussion topics include co-occurring disorders, recovery tools, coping skills, stress and anger management, the 12-step, healthy relationships, relapse prevention and personal issues. An evening women’s IOP track is scheduled from 5:30 pm to 8:45 pm, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are between four and 10 women. The women’s program focuses on issues that are relevant to the needs of women.

The outpatient track is scheduled per client’s needs. Treatment includes group and individual therapy. The program parallels IOP but is less time intensive. Also, clients completing IOP have the option to participate in aftercare, which includes one weekly group session and individual counseling.

MCCA has a huge staff, and includes more than 200 employees. The director of outpatient services is Deborah J. Gurney, who is an LPC and LADC. Other staff includes CDACs and LCSWs. Typically, insurance covers the cost of outpatient programs, but out of pocket cost is $120 per group. A 30-day IOP cost, including group therapy only, is $1,440.

Extras

Additionally, there are specialized groups including problem gambling, Mommy and Me, a Suboxone group for those on MAT, gender-specific trauma and a group dealing with various co-occurring disorders including PTSD, depression and anxiety.

Transitional housing at Sunrise Terrace, a 14-bed facility, is provided for clients who have completed IOP or who are still in treatment. Residents reside inside colonial-style townhouses and share two bedroom units. The length of stay is up to a year. Case management services are provided, and residents receive psychiatric referrals, if appropriate. Additionally, clients attend 12-step meetings, and receive help with finding jobs, enrolling in school, and with legal issues. The 30-day cost is $575.
