The Basics
Mazzitti & Sullivan began offering substance abuse and mental health counseling services to the people of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1983. Since then, this organization has expanded its reach to include Lancaster, Dauphin and Cumberland counties, providing Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adults and adolescents, general counseling and employee assistance programs.
Treatment and Staff
Mazzitti & Sullivan offers a six-week, post-detox IOP, which is 12-step in orientation. In addition to AA principles, treatment techniques include CBT and EMDR for trauma and they also offer dual diagnosis support. Clients in need of medication management must meet with their own psychiatrists, since there is no medical staff on-site. There are no 12-step meetings held here either, but clients are provided with schedules for local meetings and encouraged to attend.
IOP clients meet for three hours, three nights a week: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 pm to 9 pm. Most of this time is spent in group therapy with five to 13 other people. Group therapy counselors adhere to a general lesson plan, which includes worksheets and sometimes a video. Individual sessions vary, based on need. In addition to this IOP track, there is a dual diagnosis track that meets in the morning, an adolescent track and a beginners group that meets on Wednesday evenings.
Mazzitti & Sullivan outpatient services can be found in Hershey, Lancaster, Highspire, Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg. Using the Harrisburg location as an example with regards to staff, it employs six general counselors and three IOP counselors—more women than men. Three counselors are LCSW and one is also a CAC. The others are Master’s-level therapists and a trainee. While this office closes at 9 pm, there’s always at least one counselor on call.
Extras
While there is no family program at Mazzitti & Sullivan, some counselors welcome relatives to come in for counseling. If the client approves, loved ones join in the therapy session though this is based on need and/or upon request. EMDR is also scheduled on a per client basis, for an additional fee.
With regards to aftercare, there is a continuing care group that meets on Tuesdays from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.
In addition to its substance abuse program, Mazzitti & Sullivan EAP Services contracts with companies across the country for its employee assistance programs.
In Summary
Mazzitti & Sullivan’s IOP services are pretty standard, with the addition of dual diagnosis support and adolescent programming. Six weeks isn’t a lot of time to be in treatment, but this could be a great way for someone to ease back into life from a residential program.
