The Basics
Established over 40 years ago, Mature Services’ mission it so provide “high-quality programs to empower the economic, social, physical, and mental well-being of adults as they age.” It offers counseling, employment and training assistance as well as homecare and nutrition services to the seniors of Akron, Ohio and surrounding areas. The Avenues to Recovery program provides outpatient substance abuse treatment using evidence-based methods.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are placed in either the standard outpatient track or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Clients in standard outpatient meet for group therapy once a week and have individual therapy as-needed. Clients in the IOP meet for groups three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays—and have one-on-one sessions as well, usually once a week. Treatment plans in the IOP are completed in eight weeks and clients can stay in standard outpatient as long as they feel it’s beneficial.
Groups have an average of eight participants and are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors including MFTs and CADCs. Therapists use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) and strongly encourage clients to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings outside of treatment.
The treatment team is qualified to address co-occurring disorders, but they refer clients to nearby mental health clinics for medication for their mental health diagnosis.
Avenues to Recovery also has a Women’s Program which provides gender-specific treatment for mature women—a demographic more vulnerable to addiction than any other. In addition to group and individual therapy, the Women’s Program features case management, transportation services and grief counseling.
Extras
Family members are also invited to attend therapy with their loved one who is enrolled in Avenues to Recovery. The program also hosts the Brown Bag Medication Review, an opportunity for clients to ask a pharmacist and nurse questions about their medications.

For over four decades, Mature Services has provided programs to ensure the health and dignity of Akron’s senior citizens. Its Avenues to Recovery outpatient program offers therapy and education targeted to the specific needs of seniors. With a multitude of additional resources—including job placement and homecare assistance—Mature Services works to make sure clients have the optimism and health to make them less vulnerable to addiction.
