The Basics
Massachusetts General Hospital’s West End Clinic is a branch of the facility’s psychiatric department. Founded in 1934, it provides outpatient treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders through a number of evidence-based practices. Clients enrolled in the substance abuse treatment program have the benefit of access to a wide range of community resources and programs provided by the parent organization including mental health care and primary health care.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment to determine the client’s specific needs, a group therapy-based treatment track is designed. Treating adults aged 26 and older, groups tackle a number of different addiction-related topics including Seeking Safety for women which combines psycho-education and PTSD support, a co-ed CBT-based anxiety group, family groups for education on alcoholism, process groups, smoking cessation and relapse prevention groups. Individual therapy can also be scheduled upon request. Additionally, dual diagnosis support and medication management are available.
West End Clinic also offers a weekly mindfulness group that uses an experiential approach through meditation. Though 12-step principles are not incorporated into the program, clients are encouraged to attend local meetings if they wish.
Staff consists of MDs, PhD-level counselors, LCSWs, CADACs and LADCs.
Extras
Aside from West End Clinic’s program for adults, Massachusetts General Hospital also provides an outpatient behavioral health program for young people called Addiction Recovery Management Services (ARMS). This track is designed for clients between the ages of 15 and 26 and features many of the same treatment practices as the adult track. Family and couples therapy can also be incorporated into treatment.
In addition to outpatient substance abuse care, the hospital also offers a wide range of psychiatric and medical services including programs for eating disorders, electrotherapy and an inpatient psychiatric unit. A full list of programs is available on the organization’s website.
