The Maryland Center for Health Psychology was founded in 1987 in Towson, Maryland, by licensed psychologist Dr. Ralph D. Raphael, PhD. The organization’s Substance Abuse Treatment Program is an outpatient option for adults and adolescents struggling with alcoholism, addiction or co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Individuals interested in treatment at the Maryland Center initially meet a staff member to help determine if he or she is a good fit for the program. After completing some initial paperwork, perspective clients then meet with an intake administrator to determine their level of need and chart out a potential treatment plan. This facility does not provide residential treatment or detox at this time.
All treatment is provided by Dr. Raphael and consists of group and individual counseling where he employs a variety of treatment techniques, including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and solution-focused therapy. He also offers group and individual psychotherapy and stress management. Individual sessions are scheduled based on the needs of the client. Treatment for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17 is available in the afternoons and evenings so to not interfere with academic schedules. The exact length and intensity of the programs are based on individual need. Clients are randomly drug tested and breathalyzed during treatment.
Dr. Raphael also offers psychiatric consultation and testing as well as mental health groups for clients with potential co-occurring disorders.
As mentioned, The Substance Abuse Treatment Program at Maryland Center for Health Psychology is provided by the founder, Dr. Ralph D. Raphael.
Dr. Raphael also offers individual meetings with families if the client requests it. These meetings aim to address family issues that might have contributed to the client’s substance abuse and establish healthy communication practices in the family. Family members are also encouraged to attend outside Alanon meetings as well.
Additional services include career and personal coaching services.
