Mariposa CaliforniaThe Basics

Located near Yosemite National Park, the Mariposa County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services provides drug and alcohol counseling through the division of Mariposa County Department of Human Services. All programs and services are outpatient and feature mental health and basic substance abuse support as well as special court programs for clients with legal issues associated with behavior around addictive substances. Basic outpatient services are available from several satellite offices for children, adolescents and adults.

Treatment and Staff

Individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse must first schedule an appointment for an assessment with the intake staff. Clients with court obligations are also assessed and coordination is provided with probation officers or court liaisons.

Clients requiring detox prior to beginning treatment are referred to a recommended facility. A basic outpatient track is available for adolescents and adults who do not require intensive treatment, though each client develops an individualized treatment plan with their counselor which is modified as they progress in their recovery.

Treatment is scheduled in the mornings and evenings for adults and in the later afternoon for adolescents to accommodate school schedules. Treatment is primarily in the form of group therapy with an emphasis on relapse prevention tactics. Groups are facilitated by CADCs and typically last for one hour each.

Individual therapy is an additional component of treatment and scheduled once per week with primary counselors for follow-up and additional concerns. Counselors use evidence-based practices including CBT and DBT and typically suggest that clients attend 12-step meetings—though attendance is often compulsory based on court requirements.

Additionally, there are three court-based programs available through Mariposa County. The PC1000 Program and Prop 36 Program are court ordered tracks that expunge the record of the participant or prevent them from incarceration. The PC1000 Program is a 10-week program that requires clients to attend one three-hour group session per week. Clients must agree to drug testing and breathalyzer tests. The Prop 36 Program requires clients to attend frequent group sessions. Finally, the Drug Court program is for individuals who have not been successful with prior attempts at completing a treatment program and has an intensive group and individual therapy schedule with clients under close supervision by their parole officer and counselor.

Extras

MCBHRS provides Youth and Strategic Prevention Programming with psycho-educational courses through local school systems. In addition, the facility has a five year Harm-Reduction Model plan that aims to reduce the frequency of drinking and drug use in underage individuals. Counselors and active alumni of the program may participate and be asked to speak at the schools to share their experience, strength and hope in recovery.

Finally, the DUI program at MCBHRS is focused on providing clients with the opportunity to earn back their driving privileges. Enrollees must attend a specific number of group and individual sessions in order to complete the program. The number of sessions and time spent at the facility depends on whether this is their first, second or third DUI. Attendance of 12-step meetings is required as well as random drug and breathalyzer tests.
