The Basics
For over 40 years, the Marion Area Counseling Center has been providing residents of Northwest Ohio with social services and treatment for substance abuse. Located in Marion, a small city 50 miles north of Columbus in north central Ohio, MACC offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). MACC also offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for those suffering from opioid addiction and runs Foundations Recovery Center, a long-term residential treatment facility for men and women.
MACC has expanded operations in recent years to accommodate the need for treating victims of the area heroin epidemic. The facility currently provides mental health and substance abuse counseling services to over 3,500 residents each year.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients attend group therapy four- to five-days a week for two weeks. This is the stabilization phase of the IOP and during this time, clients also have individual therapy as-needed. After successfully completing this phase, clients are then placed in additional groups and attend sessions two or three times each week, depending on their treatment plan. Clients then work with their counselors to step-down to a lesser frequency of group and individual therapy and decide when to end treatment.
Groups address topics such as handling triggers and living with dual diagnosis and use evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Gender-specific groups are available and groups usually contain 10 to 15 participants. MACC advocates peer support meetings such as AA/NA and/or faith-based peer support groups. Clients are required to commit to a number of peer support meetings each week and to find a sponsor while in treatment.
The treatment team at MACC includes Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors including LPCs and LCDCs. Staff are trained in treating co-occurring disorders and clients have access to a psychiatrist for medication for mental health diagnoses and MAT.
Extras
Family therapy is available to IOP clients and MACC has extensive case-management services for those who need help accessing other community services and coordinating care. For aftercare, many clients of the IOP schedule periodic individual therapy sessions with their primary counselor.
In Summary
Marion Area Counseling Center has a long history of delivering effective mental health and substance abuse treatment to the residents of north central Ohio. By requiring a high level of almost-daily treatment in the initial stages of its IOP, the Center helps to stabilize clients and ensure that they’re well-prepared to create and maintain a sober lifestyle.
