Founded in 2007 in Marina del Rey, California by executive director Alicia Mencacci, Marina House is an intimate, high-end sober living house for women in early recovery. Mencacci, who is a CADC, has been clean and sober since 1997. At Marina House, the focus is on providing an intimate and nurturing atmosphere, so that women can learn to love themselves while building a strong foundation in their recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

Marina House is a 3,100 square foot two story residence that boasts a pale pastel interior, tile floors and a large living room with French doors leading out into a private backyard replete with hanging foliage. Marina House accommodates no more than nine women, in keeping with its family style atmosphere. There are three double-occupancy bedrooms and a master bedroom, which accommodates three clients and has a huge walk-in closet. The house has three and half bathrooms. Rooms are furnished with twin size beds that have headboards made from natural wood, matching nightstands, dressers, closet space, lamps and spacious windows with a view.

While food is provided, residents cook for themselves. Clients who love to cook and often prepare meals for the entire household. Beverages and snacks are also included. Amenities include gym membership, transportation to clinical appointments, a computer station with Internet, Wi-Fi and Direct TV. There is live-in staff that provides around the clock supervision. Housekeeping is provided on a weekly basis, so the women don’t need to worry about chores and can just focus on their recovery.

Rules and Regulations

Mencacci meets with prospective clients, so that both parties can ensure that Marina House is an appropriate fit. While most clients have completed rehab and have at least 30 days of sobriety by the time they arrive to Marina House, women are accepted on a case-by-case basis. Additionally, Mencacci reviews the needs of each client who receives an individualized recovery plan.

Marina House follows a 12-step protocol, and clients must attend daily AA/NA meetings and work steps with a sponsor. Clients are also encouraged to seek employment, attend school or perform community service work. Those in outpatient treatment are provided with transportation. At Marina’s House, women also participate in meditation and a women’s support group. Additionally, staff is on hand to provide mentoring and feedback.

Besides Mencacci, the team includes director Claudia Brancaccio, who is also a CADC, and three on-site staff members.
