Looking to treat alcoholism in their county, a group of concerned citizens opened Marco Services in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on Lake Michigan in 1977. For almost 40 years, Marco Services, Inc. has been utilizing 12-step principles to help local residents develop and maintain more productive, sober lives in a low cost, extended stay residential setting.
Accommodations and Food
Clients live in modest accommodations in an older two-story home in a quiet residential neighborhood. Six bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms are shared between twelve residents, who also share all common areas, the television, the kitchen and the house phone (once approved). Cell phones and personal computers stay at home.
All meals are planned and prepared by the residents. They do all of their own shopping, and they eat together, family style, in the dining room. At some point during the week, each client will be asked to prepare a main dish, including a protein, vegetable and fruit. Dietary considerations are worked out within the group.
Sugar and caffeine are allowed, but there is no smoking on the grounds.
Treatment and Staff
Marco’s residents are free to leave whenever they choose, but most clients live at the facility for at least six months. This is the only drug and alcohol treatment facility in Manitowoc, and all potential clients must be referred through the county’s counseling center. While Marco does not offer a detox program, a consulting MD can refer clients to local hospitals.
Treatment is based around 12-step ideology and therapy. It’s very straightforward and simple: talk it out in the room and go to meetings. Clients are encouraged to get sponsors and to work the steps.
There are both group and individual therapy sessions and residents attend on-site meetings five days a week. There’s an off-site AA meeting across the street that the clients walk to once a week. Each client is required by Wisconsin state law to get one individual therapy session a week, but may get as many as three. The types of therapy offered (and how often) are dependent upon what the treatment team deems necessary. This team of six is evenly split between credentialed and peer counselors, and there are never more than two clients for each staff member.
Residents at Marco wake up at 6 am for breakfast at 7 and have group or individual therapy until lunch at 11 am. After lunch is more group or individual therapy followed by an exercise period and dinner at 6 pm. The nightly AA meeting is followed by free time until lights out at 11 pm.
Exercise is also built into the program at Marco using the Wellness Model. There are free weights available to be used at the house and clients can do yoga with the staff or go to the YMCA free of charge. Weekends are less structured and include extracurricular activities, like bowling.
The only drug and alcohol treatment facility serving Manitowoc County for almost 40 years, Marco Services, Inc. provides extended and economical local support for total abstinence in recovery.
