MansfieldThe Basics

Founded in 1980 through the efforts of Ohio State Rep. Williams L. Mallory, the Mansfield Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program in north-central Ohio offers outpatient treatment for those struggling with drug and alcohol abuse. The program was founded in large part to address the needs of the undeserved local African-American and Latino populations and has culturally-specific treatment for minorities. Mansfield Urban aims to provide affordable treatment to everyone regardless of financial limitations; the program accepts private and public insurance, as well as self-pay on a sliding scale. Treatment at Mansfield Urban includes medication assistance, medical attention and counseling. 12-step recovery is not part of the program and dual diagnosis treatment and detox are not offered.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Mansfield Urban begins with a physical and a medical history. Clients then meet with a treatment counselor to discuss addiction and mental health history. From this assessment, an individualized treatment plan is created.

If the client needs medication-assisted therapy to help wean off opiates, a doctor prescribes medication, typically Suboxone. Though medication-assisted treatment is offered, the staff are aware that many addicts abuse opiates prescribed for withdrawal.  The physicians, nurses and staff keep an eye on this to ensure clients are taking the medication as prescribed.

Outpatient treatment includes group sessions two to three times a week. Groups include drug and alcohol education, developing positive coping skills, relapse prevention and learning tools to promote abstinence. Anger and stress management groups are also offered. In addition to group, clients have individual counseling sessions once a week.

The staff at Mansfield Urban includes two physicians, a nurse, and LDACs. There are approximately six clients to each staff member.

Extras

Mansfield Urban offers many community resources to help clients get back on their feet and stabilize not only psychologically and chemically, but also in the areas of housing, education, vocational preparedness and family reunification.

Court-ordered clients receive guidance on how to reenter society after being incarcerated or receiving treatment.

Family programming is offered at the facility and it’s recommended that families play a role in clients’ recovery. For those with children, services are offered to help them regain custody. Pregnant women or women with children under three years of age can benefit from the Help Me Grow program.

In Summary

For those looking for an outpatient program that includes medically-assisted treatment, Mansfield Urban is a great option. Clients who need medical supervision will benefit from the team of physicians on staff at the facility.
