The Basics

Sweetwater Mesa is tucked away in the Malibu hills, overlooking the ocean and some of the most exclusive properties in Southern California. One of the four Malibu Beach Sober Living homes, Sweetwater Mesa is just off the Pacific Coast Highway, within the gated Serra Retreat neighborhood. While autonomy and independence are the goal, Sweetwater Mesa adheres to the philosophy that sober living is the perfect way to transition from primary care back into daily life.

Accommodations and Amenities

Sweetwater Mesa is situated just below the tranquil Serra Retreat Center, surrounded by landscaped walkways and hiking trails, this co-ed house has panoramic ocean views. The house also has a pool and hot tub, state of the art kitchen with separate formal dining room, living room, game room with a pool table and a meditation room.

There are eight bedrooms—four single master bedrooms with private baths and four double occupancy rooms with en suite bathrooms. Residents sleep in queen size beds, each with their own dressers, nightstands and closets. Décor throughout the house is plush and modern.

All food is organic (and local when possible) and purchased three times per week. Meals are prepared with fresh meat, poultry, fruits and vegetables. A professional gourmet chef prepares the evening meal, while residents prepare their own lunch and dinner.

Rules and Regulations

While 12-step meetings are not mandatory, Sweetwater requires that residents participate in at least two hours of recovery per day, such as outpatient treatment, 12-step meetings, yoga, meditation and individual therapy. Yoga and meditation classes are offered daily. Curfew is 11 pm Monday through Thursday, and midnight on Friday and Saturday. Cell phones, computers and outdoor smoking are permitted. The house has 24-hour live-in staff and two to three extra support staff during the day, for drug testing and dispute management.

A mandatory morning group meets Monday through Friday, with an optional AA meeting off-site afterwards. There is also an optional AA meeting at noon each day, located at the Serra Retreat Center. Both morning and afternoon meetings are walking distance from the house. On Thursday evenings, clients are transported to Indigo Ranch, a relative of Sweetwater Mesa, for dinner and an AA meeting. Dinner is served from 6 pm to 7 pm and residents from local treatment centers are invited to join—the meeting follows. Residents are permitted to invite family, friends and their sponsors.

Extras

Saturday is surf day, where clients from all four Malibu Sober Living homes gather for surf lessons, a barbeque then an optional beach meeting. Sunday night is a 12-step musicians meeting, held at the Indigo Ranch house. Clients have dinner first and there is an open jam session after.

Other amenities include tennis courts, superb nutrition, gym membership, a house keeper, high speed internet, flat screen TV and cable in every room and of course a laundry room. Sweetwater Mesa staffers provide daily transportation to all outside appointments and errands.

A sense community exists between Sweetwater Mesa and the other three houses: The Beach House, Serra Bluff and Indigo Ranch.

In Summary

Sweetwater Mesa provides luxury accommodations and a wealth of amenities in a tranquil location—there is even an orchid garden! Clients get ample opportunity to socialize in a safe environment, not just with their sober community, but with loved ones as well. This is family-friendly sober living, which makes sense, since these are the people clients are eventually returning home to.
