The Basics
Maine Behavioral Healthcare is a mental health organization with over 20 facilities throughout the state of Maine. Founded in 2014, the organization is a result of multiple agencies merging—Community Counseling Center, Counseling Services Inc., Mid-Coast Mental Health Center, Spring Harbor Community Services and Spring Harbor Hospital, making up the division of Maine Health that provides mental health services.
Outpatient substance abuse treatment for adults, adolescents and families is available in Belfast, Biddeford, Kittery, Rockland, Springvale and Westbrook clinics. Flexible payment options are available for clients who have difficulties paying, or services are available at a low daily or hourly fee.
Treatment and Staff
MBH offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) track as well as basic outpatient services for adults and adolescents. No detox services are available, but any clients in need of this service are given referrals.
Prior to enrollment in a program, clients must schedule an appointment for an assessment to determine the proper treatment track for their needs. If the family requires specialized services, they may attend the assessment to be included in treatment planning. All clients meet with their assigned counselors in order to develop an individualized treatment plan.
All treatment methods are based on the Stages of Change Model. Therapists emphasize the stages of pre-contemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance and relapse prevention stages. This model of therapy is especially effective for individuals who are in need of dual-diagnosis support and additional mental health services. Treatment includes group and individual therapy all scheduled according to the client’s needs. The outpatient track is the most flexible treatment option and is ideal for clients who only require sessions once or twice per week.
The IOP track is individualized but requires more of a commitment since clients attend therapeutic activities three days per week. Clients may attend group and individual therapy in the mornings, afternoons or early evenings depending on their schedules and obligations. The IOP utilizes the Differential Substance Abuse Treatment (DSAT) model, a treatment approach developed for use by the Maine Department of Corrections. The DSAT model utilizes Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) techniques.
Adolescent care uses the same methods as the adult tracks, but individual and group sessions are tailored for the specific needs of young people.
All clients are required to stay abstinent during their treatment and are regularly drug tested to ensure clean time and sobriety. Additional support groups are recommended and all clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings—though not required. All treatment is facilitated by LADC and LPCs.
Extras
Aftercare services are available on an individual basis. If a client wishes to continue to see their counselor after program completion, they may arrange individual appointments. In addition, family services are available including support groups at the facility.
In Summary
Maine Behavioral Healthcare offers outpatient and IOP treatment options for adults and adolescents in six of their facilities. All therapies are based on the Stages of Change Model and a unique model to Maine known as Differential Substance Abuse Treatment model. All programs are highly individualized to each client and tailored to their schedules and obligations. The family unit is integrated into the treatment process allowing clients to be supported with a healthy environment conducive to their recovery. Treatment is available at a sliding scale fee for clients with difficulties paying.
