The Basics
Mahaska Health Partnership is a large provider of primary and behavioral healthcare in Oskaloosa, Iowa, a small town 60 miles southeast of Des Moines. MHP prides itself on its commitment to continually evolving its treatment practices to take advantage of advances in technology and patient care practices. Since 2004, its Behavioral Health department has offered outpatient substance abuse treatment.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at MHP is at the standard outpatient level of care in which clients attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. The duration of treatment plans is customized to each client after their assessment, but most plans last at least three months.
Therapy groups usually have 10 to 12 participants and are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors such as MSWs and CADCs. The foundation of therapy is CBT and the treatment team also encourages clients to attend 12-step meetings outside of treatment. Schedules and nearby meeting locations are furnished upon request. The Seeking Safety curriculum is also used in gender-specific groups for women who have suffered trauma. All substance abuse clinicians at MHP are also trained in EMDR to help with trauma treatment.
MHP’s treatment team also includes two psychiatrists who support clients with co-occurring disorders. Clients with mental health diagnoses may also access other members of MHP’s Behavioral Health team.
Extras
For aftercare, clients can attend a weekly Continuing Care group for relapse prevention. Clients can also request family therapy appointments from MHP’s Behavioral Health department.
