johnson city tennesseeMagnolia Ridge Review

Located in Johnson City, Tennessee, Magnolia Ridge is a residential substance abuse facility offering dual diagnosis support, inpatient care and a medically assisted detox. Magnolia Ridge falls under the banner of Frontier Health, a provider of behavioral health services with a plethora of outpatient facilities, psychiatric crisis units, group homes, peer support facilities and vocational services in northeastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia.

Accommodations and Food

While Magnolia Ridge does provide detox services for both men and women at their treatment center, the 19-bed residential program at the same facility is for men only. Clients in this track typically stay for 28 days and share a room with a roommate, though Magnolia Ridge makes an effort to give residents private rooms during detox. Rooms include twin beds, basic furnishings and a shared bathroom in the hall, while single rooms come with their own bathrooms.

There is a cook on staff who provides three hot meals a day for clients. All meals are eaten together in the facility cafeteria. Those attending Magnolia Ridge should not expect a wide variety of social or recreational activities; while there is a basketball court on the premises and time set aside each day for social or relaxation time, days are largely comprised of treatment, chores and rest.

Treatment and Staff

As mentioned, the treatment at Magnolia Ridge begins with a three- to seven-day medically assisted detox facilitated by a 24/7 nursing staff, with visits from a staff physician. This service is open to both men and women. Upon completion, men can transition to the program at Magnolia Ridge while women in need of residential care are accommodated by Frontier Health’s Willow Ridge, a 12-bed facility with similar services located nearby.

Given that Magnolia Ridge specializes in co-occurring disorders, clients can expect several group therapy sessions a day throughout the week that address both substance abuse and mental health issues, all led by LADCs. There is an emphasis on evidence based treatment as well as an introduction to the 12 steps, with weekly on-site meetings and group trips to meetings in the community. There are individual therapy sessions available each week by appointment with Magnolia Ridge’s Master’s-level clinicians. Clients can also expect regular meetings with a staff psychiatrist who provides medication management, though Suboxone treatment is not available. On occasion, the facility brings in outside speakers for educational lectures. There is also a family program, with group sessions incorporating a client’s immediate family.

Aftercare takes the form of attending one group session a week at the Magnolia Ridge facility. Clients can also be placed in one of Frontier Health’s 18 outpatient programs.

Extras

In addition to aftercare, clients can receive other benefits from Frontier Health’s vast resources once inpatient ends. This may include placement in a sober living, vocational rehabilitation, educational assistance classes and medical or dental aid.

In Summary

While the inpatient program at Magnolia Ridge is relatively short-term, clients can expect comprehensive care with a focus on co-occurring disorders. Days are busy with group therapy and individual sessions and a wide range of aftercare options are available once treatment ends. Though there is not as much time for recreational, Magnolia Ridge does offer a solid program for dual diagnosis recovery.
