Magnolia Creek Review
Magnolia Creek is a women’s only residential treatment center located just outside Birmingham, Alabama. This facility offers treatment that is focused on eating disorders and well as co-occurring conditions and substance abuse. Evidence-based practices and holistic models are offered to clients through group and individual therapy.
Accommodations and Food
The Magnolia Creek residential facility sits in a quiet and picturesque setting among a heavily wooded 36 acres of land. Clients stay in a large colonial style, one story home that is on a private lake complete with quaint walking bridge and gazebo. The facility can accommodate up to 14 clients in four double occupancy bedrooms and four shared full bathrooms. The facility is very spacious and comfortable, with a large living room, state of the art kitchen, laundry machines, fireplaces and wrap around porch with rocking chairs. There is also computer access and TV that clients are allowed to have access to once they are out of the first phase of treatment.
The clients are served three meals and three snacks per day that are prepared by an on-site chef. With the emphasis on eating disorders at this facility, the food is hearty and filling, and many different options, including dessert, are offered.
Treatment and Staff
During the average stay of two to four months—though staying on longer is an option—clients have a structured daily schedule of therapy, recreation and exercise. A typical day would include an early morning wake up followed by a meditation, several classes and group therapy sessions. Classes can include cooking, writing or art therapy and group therapy covers coping skills, relapse prevention or CBT. There are also weekly individual therapy sessions and daily exercise factored into the day.
The programs are set up in phases with the first 30 days in treatment being the most rigid. This means no phone or Internet privileges. After that, every week there is a check-in with the therapist to get a few more luxuries back, like day passes to visit family. As the program progresses for each individual client the intensity of treatment lessens until they are discharged. The clients work closely with their therapist to develop an aftercare plan that may include an outpatient program. Treatment also includes elements from the 12 steps, trauma informed therapy if necessary and mindfulness practices. The clinical, medical and residential staff at Magnolia Creek includes MFTs, LCSWs, medical doctors and LPNs.
Extras
Though clients are permitted to frequently leave the facility for group outings like shopping trips, movie nights or getting their nails done, the facility grounds provides plenty of entertainment. There is a fire pit, walking trails and fishing in the lake. There is regular exercise that is lead by the staff, like hiking or weekly yoga. There are weights on site that the clients can use, but not full gym, so the clients can be taken to the local gym a couple of times a week if they so desire.
This facility offers a three-day intensive family program once a month, and an ongoing aftercare program.

Magnolia Creek takes an all hands on deck approach to gender-specific treatment in a serene and comfortable environment. The aim is to get the client as healthy as possible while exploring the root of their addiction. This is a fabulous choice for women who struggle with substance abuse, eating disorders or co-occurring mental health issues.
