Maehnowesekiyah Wellness Center

The Basics

The Maehnowesekiyah Wellness Center (MWC) provides culturally specific health, wellness and social services to the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin. Located on the Menominee Indian Reservation in Gresham, Wisconsin, clients are surrounded by a close knit community and other culturally specific resources. The substance abuse treatment program provided by MWC is outpatient with a focus on education.

Treatment and Staff

As previously mentioned, the treatment at MWC has a strong emphasis on education but also regularly integrates the 12 steps. The program is highly individualized, as the staff believes each person’s experience is unique and therefore their treatment plan should be created with respect to those unique needs. Clients are initially evaluated to determine the level of care needed. From there counselors begin developing an individualized treatment plan that determines the type of treatment modalities and the frequency of sessions.

Treatment plans may consist of individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, educational sessions and 12-step support groups. Group sessions, educational sessions and AA/NA meetings are held daily at the Wellness Center. Clients attend based on their availability and treatment plan. Individual therapy and family therapy are scheduled separately between client and counselor. Most of the therapies are based in CBT methodology but MWC also implements holistic and spiritual approaches. The program here is designed for a primary diagnosis of substance abuse so those struggling with co-occurring disorders might be better served at a facility with a more extensive medical component.

The staff at MWC consists of CADCs and LPCs.

Extras

In addition to the comprehensive outpatient substance abuse treatment program, MWC and the Menominee Tribe offer numerous other services and programs to clients and tribal members. Other offerings include mental health counseling, domestic violence support groups, early childhood services, social services, food distribution, education services, cultural preservation services and tribal courts.

In Summary

The Maehnowesekiyah Wellness Center is intended for members of the Menominee Tribe of Wisconsin who are seeking culturally specific outpatient treatment for substance abuse. The program successfully intertwines evidence-based components, holistic approaches, education and the 12 steps to treat the individual as a whole.
