Lutheran Family ServicesThe Basics

Originally founded in 1892 as an orphanage, Lutheran Family Services offers affordable behavioral health care, as well as community resources, in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1980, the facility began a treatment program for substance abuse. Lutheran Family Services operates both an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and outpatient program for substance abuse.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment includes 12-step philosophy and evidence-based practices. Dual diagnosis treatment is offered but there is no detox. Most insurance plans are accepted for payment. For those who wish to self-pay, cost is determined by income on a sliding scale.

Clients begin treatment with an evaluation of drug and alcohol history to determine what level of treatment fits their needs. Depending on the evaluation, clients are either referred to the IOP or outpatient. Treatment for both programs includes a combination of individual and group therapy.  Topics include relapse prevention, positive coping skills, CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), psychoeducation and 12-step educational groups.

Those with dual diagnosis can receive medication management through nurse practitioners; there is no psychiatrist on staff. Both group and individual therapy addresses mental health issues.

Prior to enrolling in treatment, clients agree to certain conditions.  Any absences must be pre-approved and step work assignments must be completed. In addition, clients are screened for drug and alcohol use.

The IOP groups meet four times a week from 6 pm to 9 pm, in addition to individual therapy once a week. Typically, the IOP lasts six weeks, but it ultimately depends on the individual. Many times clients transition from IOP to the regular outpatient program. Standard outpatient groups meet once a week on Wednesdays from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, in addition to individual sessions.

Staff members include LADCs, licensed mental health therapists and registered nurses. There are approximately five clients for every staff member.

Extras

The family program includes addiction education, as well as group and individual therapy.

Those in treatment who need additional help with housing, childcare, medical care and continued mental health care have access to the other services offered at Lutheran Family Services.

In Summary

For those interested in an outpatient program that uses both the 12-steps and evidence-based practices, Lutheran Family Services may be a good pick. The setting is ideal for someone who is not in an emergency or acute state of addiction, but still needs a high level of support.
