Lucida Treatment CenterLucida Treatment Center Review

Located just outside of Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the town of Lantana is Lucida, a part of Elements Behavioral Health. While creating holistic plans for each individual’s needs is certainly a recurring claim of many rehabs, Lucida truly makes this concept a reality.

Accommodations and Food

Residents at Lucida live in designer-furnished, semi-private townhouses right along the coastline and complete with ocean views. The entire program can house up to 12 at a time, and clients have the option to stay in a private townhouse for an additional cost. The residences are within a short walking distance of the treatment facility. Housekeeping services and a personal chef come as part of the package.

Mealtime at Lucida takes center stage, as learning how to cook and eat nutritionally sound food is paramount here. A significant portion of addiction treatment is dedicated to making sure clients do not develop disordered eating as a result of their addiction or mood disorders.

The team at Lucida is not on board with the idea that addicts should just replace alcohol or drugs with sugar to cope. The director of the healthy lifestyle program, Dr. Pamela Peeke, is a medical doctor and best-selling author renowned in her fields of nutrition and fitness. The professional chefs she oversees at Lucida are also licensed dieticians, an offering few rehabs can boast.

Meals served here definitely take a clean eating approach so clients can expect no processed, sugary or excessively salty menu items. Residents work directly with Peeke and her team in an effort to solidify long-term healthy eating habits.

Treatment and Staff

Upon arrival, each client is subject to a five-day assessment period in order to truly assign the best method of treatment, taking into account all the various factors that might have affected a client’s life.

There are three primary 30 to 90 day programs offered to Lucida clients. There’s the basic Addictions Program, the Multicultural Program for Spanish Speakers (one of very few offered in the United States) and the Women’s Mood Disorders Program. The latter program treats the clientele with an exclusively female staff and also employs newer therapies such as Somatic Experiencing, Craniosacral Therapy and EMDR.

Lucida boasts a three-to-one staff-to-client ratio overall. Each resident is equipped with a team of Master’s-level therapists, case managers and care coordinators. In addition, there are weekly meetings with a board-certified psychiatrist for clients with a dual-diagnosis; medication management is also available.

Treatment is mostly evidence-based, with 12-step groups available though not the only option. They are very quick to acknowledge that the 12-step recovery method does not work for everyone. Clients can also participate in SMART Recovery, a growing alternative to traditional AA or NA. Lucida is also a proponent of the BRENDA approach, which combines CBT and medication (on an as-needed basis) with the theory that recovery can’t continue before hitting bottom.

Their philosophy promotes greeting clients with compassion and motivation rather than shame and confrontation. It’s worth noting they are also proponents of using non-addictive medication to decrease drug and alcohol cravings. On top of these core elements and the aforementioned fitness and diet emphasis, they also incorporate equine therapyneurofeedback, educational groups and a monthly family program.

Extras

A high-end rehab by the beach would not be complete without extracurricular activities like sailing, swimming with dolphins, the aforementioned equine therapy, yoga and a ropes course. Housekeeping, a personal chef and cooking classes are also a part of the treatment curriculum. In addition, clients have access to acupuncture, massage therapy and salon treatments (per request and for an extra fee).

In Summary

For those seeking a holistic approach to sobriety that doesn’t solely rely on the foundation of 12-step, Lucida is a solid option. Their facility accepts health insurance, and seems very hands-on and invested in making sure graduates stay fully recovered after their time in treatment.
