The Basics
Lucas County Health Center is a member of Iowa’s UnityPoint Health Des Moines medical provider network. LCHS has been serving the residents of South Central Iowa since the 1950s, and two years ago it began offering outpatient substance abuse treatment. Clients can access outpatient services in its Chariton counseling clinic located 50 miles south of Des Moines.
Treatment and Staff
Prospective clients receive a full bio-psycho-social assessment after which they’re placed in the intensive outpatient program (IOP) or Extended Outpatient Program (EOP). Clients in the IOP attend group therapy three times each week and individual therapy once a week. Most clients attend the IOP for four weeks.
Clients enrolled in the EOP attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. Most clients complete their treatment plan in the EOP in 12 weeks, and clients can step down from the IOP to the EOP.
Therapy groups have no more than 12 participants and are led by Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors with Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW), Licensed Master’s-level Social Workers (LMSW) and International Alcohol and Drug Counselor (IADC) credentials. The treatment team uses the 12-step framework, CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings while in treatment and offers a list of nearby 12-step meetings on the LCHC website.
The treatment team collaborates with its colleagues in LCHC’s Behavioral Health Department to create treatment plans for clients with co-occurring disorders. These may include additional therapy and medication, as well as referrals to outside agencies for other supportive services.
Extras
Family therapy is available for those who’d like to participate in their loved one’s recovery. For aftercare, clients work with their counselor to create a plan likely to include monthly group and/or individual therapy.
In Summary
Lucas County Health Center has created an outpatient program well-integrated with its behavioral health department. As such, clients with addiction issues that are impacted or influenced by trauma and/or mental health disorders might find clinicians up-to-date on the newest medications and evidence-based treatment practices.
