Interventionists San Juan CapistranoThe Basics

Loriann Witte is the co-founder and lead interventionist at Wits Inn Recovery, a treatment organization in San Juan Capistrano, California. After beginning her personal journey of recovery in 1987, Witte was inspired to help others get clean and sober. Her background working with addicts in residential treatment, the California prison system and private practices gives Witte the insight needed to guide addicts and alcoholics as they begin their own path of recovery.

Witte has specialized training to treat clients dealing with co-occurring disorders such as eating disorders, sexual abuse, trauma, PTSD, personality disorders and mental illness, as well as those in the LGBT community. She works with families and clients to develop individualized treatment approaches starting with intervention. Witte is a Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC), Certified Intervention Professional (CIP) and a Certified Mental Health Professional (CMHP).

The Background

Witte opened Wits End Recovery in 1990 to offer intervention and care coordination services for addicts and their families. She is available to travel anywhere in the country to facilitate interventions, as her services are required. Many of her staff members are in recovery as well and bring their own experience and strength to their work. Witte became inspired by her extensive work with family members in traditional treatment to help other families get their loved ones into treatment.

The Approach

Witte has multiple meetings with the family prior to the intervention depending on the unique needs of each case. The number of meetings depends upon the complexity of the case and acuity of the client’s addiction. The support team and the interventionist agree on a treatment facility that best suits their needs and budget. Family members prepare written statements describing the ways the addict’s behavior has adversely impacted their lives, which they rehearse prior to the intervention.

Interventions typically last one to two hours and typically incorporate the ARISE Intervention Model, the Johnson Model and the Systematic Family Intervention Model. Once the client agrees to treatment, they are immediately transported to a treatment facility, usually Wits End Recovery or Spencer Recovery Center in nearby Laguna Beach, California, with which she is also affiliated. The intervention team and family remain in contact throughout treatment and clients and families are encouraged to participate in 12-step meetings including AA/NA and Alanon.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Witte and her team arrange aftercare or continuing care services for clients and families seeking further support following the intervention and treatment. Families and the client are given referrals or information on family therapy. Services include addiction consulting, case management, clinical assessments and legal consultation. If the client relapses and the family is feeling defeated, Witte and the Wits End Recovery team are able to provide additional resources and recommendations for the next step.
