Lorain County Project On Our Own was founded in 2004 in Lorain, Ohio, a town about 30 miles west of Cleveland. The program is operated under the Northern Ohio Recovery Association, and offers outpatient treatment to adult men battling substance abuse in the Lorain County area.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at Lorain begins with an initial phone call followed by an in-person assessment with one of the organization’s counselors to help determine the potential client’s potential level of care. If the individual does not have insurance, they work with Lorain’s counselors to sign them up for Medicaid, which covers the cost of treatment. Men who are in need of a higher level of care are referred to outside residential or detox programs.

Lorain offers both a regular outpatient program as well as an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The treatment implements both group and individual therapy. IOP meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to one pm for group, while the standard outpatient program usually just meets one day a week. Lorain’s IOP lasts for two to three months depending on the needs of the client, and then clients step-down to the outpatient program which has a flexible length, allowing clients to leave at their own pace. Individual sessions are scheduled on a case-by-case basis.

The group sessions in both programs are generally very small with three to eight clients per group. Counselors utilize CBT, education and sharing. Lorain also teaches clients financial literacy, life skills and communication skills to encourage a successful transition into recovery after treatment. Lorain is 12-step based and counselors work through the steps in the group meetings. Clients are also required to attend weekly outside AA or NA meetings as well as strongly encouraged to find a sponsor while in treatment.

The organization does not provide dual diagnosis support, but does refer clients with potential co-occurring disorders to outside mental health providers. Lorain’s counselors consist of a mixture of MSWs and LADCs.

Extras

In terms of aftercare, the organization offers a weekly relapse prevention group that clients can start attending when they finish treatment. This group focuses on providing men in recovery with a safe space to discuss their progress as well as providing them with the skills needed to avoid relapse.

 In Summary

Lorain County Project On Our Own offers flexible and affordable outpatient treatment to adult men in Lorain County. The small group sizes allow clients to receive a high level of individual attention while also garnering peer support. The 12-step focus creates a foundation of recovery that can continue long after treatment completion.
