The Basics

Just five minutes from Chattanooga, Tennessee and 90 minutes from Atlanta, Georgia, Lookout Mountain Community Services has been helping addicts and alcoholics struggling with co-occurring disorders for over 20 years. Lookout Mountain has two clinics, one in Ft. Oglethorpe and one in LaFayette, providing outpatient substance abuse services for adults and adolescents in Catoose and Walker Counties.

Treatment and Staff

Both facilities are clinical settings, with waiting rooms that are typical of any community center. Clients check in with the receptionist in the lobby, which is furnished with hardback chairs and linoleum floors. Individual sessions are held in counseling offices, while groups take place in a small conference room. The first step in treatment at Lookout Mountain is an assessment with an LPC, at which point a treatment plan is outlined.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is the most structured level of care—12 weeks, four times a week, for three hours each time, with morning and evening sessions available. Groups are facilitated by an LPC utilizing CBT and size is limited to 15 participants. Topics include addiction education, peer pressure, coping skills, introduction to the 12 steps and managing cravings. There are gender-specific groups, process groups and groups for clients with co-occurring disorders. Clients see a therapist once a week for individual therapy and a psychiatrist for medication management. They are also encouraged to attend outside 12-step meetings (court ordered clients must provide proof of attendance; they are also required to attend an anger management group).

Outpatient for adults is also 12 weeks long, but clients meet twice a week for two hours. As with IOP, there is a morning and evening option. Group topics are similar to IOP, but there are no groups for co-occurring disorders at this level. Individual therapy is scheduled as needed but not required. If individual sessions are scheduled, they take place in addition to the four hours of group. As with IOP, clients are encouraged to attend outside 12-step meetings for continued support.

While the website states that the adolescent outpatient program includes group therapy, at this time individual therapy is the only option for minors. Duration of treatment and number of sessions per week are based on the assessment and vary from client to client. Adolescent services are offered at the Ft. Oglethorpe location only.

The Lookout Mountain treatment team consists of LPCs and psychiatrists.

In Summary

Lookout Mountain Community Services provides comprehensive services for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. While most of the clients are court ordered, the level of education and experience of the treatment team make this facility appear to be a safe choice for self referred clients as well.
