Looking Glass Foundation Review

Founded in 2002, Looking Glass Foundation is a community-oriented organization that offers flexible treatment services to men, women and teens struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. Based out of Vancouver, Canada, it facilitates the country’s first residential treatment program for young adults with eating disorders, and a variety of additional services as well.

Accommodations and Food

Looking Glass is a sprawling residential home with a total of 14 beds available for young men and women, ages 17 to 24. Residents stay in gender-separate, shared rooms with twin beds, dressers, bedside tables and comfortable decorations. In addition to the bedrooms, the home also features shared living areas with couches, cable TV, WiFi, therapy rooms, yoga and meditation areas and a fully-equipped kitchen. Throughout their stay, all clients are served three meals a day with the help of on-staff nutritionists and chefs.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, all residents go through an intake and assessment process to help staff members develop their individualized care plans. While on-site medical detox and stabilization services are not provided, clients can get referrals whenever necessary. Once stabilized, all residents attend full days of programming that includes both individual and group therapy with evidence-based treatment practices that vary by practitioner.

In addition to psychotherapy, clients also attend nutritional counseling to learn about food as well as how to cook and prepare their own meals. Therapy plans also include a range of holistic care approaches including yoga, meditation and mindfulness training as well. Though basic dual diagnosis support is available for anxiety and depression, those with more severe psychiatric issues may need to seek additional help elsewhere.

The staff at the Looking Glass Foundation consists of dietitians, personal trainers, LMFTs, LCSWs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Looking Glass also integrates additional methods like gardening therapy to help residents relieve stress, as well as trips to local restaurants as a form of exposure therapy. In addition to the more intensive residential care, early prevention and intervention programs are also offered along with an eight-day summer camp for adolescents who are at-risk of developing eating disorders. Scholarships are available for clients who can’t afford therapy as well, as is online peer support whenever necessary. Finally, those who complete a program can also work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare plans.

In Summary

Overall, the Looking Glass Foundation is a bastion of eating disorder treatment for young men and women in the Vancouver area. Treatment plans are individualized and include evidence-based treatment practices, holistic care and additional community-oriented ancillary services as well. For those seeking intensive support for eating disorders, the Looking Glass Foundation is a strong resource with a range of available programs.
