Eugene OregonThe Basics

Looking Glass Counseling Center offers outpatient substance abuse treatment for adolescents between the ages of 11 and 21 and their families. Located on a pleasant, tree lined street in Eugene, Oregon, LGCC has been treating families in Lane County and surrounding areas since 1971.

In addition to outpatient services, LGCC operates several other programs for youth in crisis. The first, Station 7, is a program which provides emergency shelter and safe spaces. New Roads is a transitional housing program, there are also three alternative schools and a residential substance abuse and mental health treatment program for adolescent boys and girls.

Treatment and Staff

For outpatient treatment, the first step is an assessment, facilitated by a Master’s-level therapist. Adolescents under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Clients are assessed for cognitive, behavioral and emotional health as well as substance abuse.  Those with co-occurring disorders are referred to a psychiatrist for medication management.

After the initial evaluation, a therapy schedule is devised. The frequency of visits and duration of treatment depends on the individual. Therapy utilizes CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) and discuss topics such as peer pressure, identifying triggers, co-occurring disorders, managing depression and anxiety, coping skills, addiction and brain development and developing healthy pastimes. If a client is a good candidate for 12-step meetings, his or her therapist recommends frequency and offer nearby locations.

Clients may also give their therapist permission to contact their teachers and guidance counselors to get a bigger picture of how their substance abuse may be affecting their school life.

While the adolescents do not attend substance abuse peer groups, family therapy is offered and encouraged. These groups address family dynamics and utilize role playing, CBT, addiction and family and communication skills. The treatment team consists of MFTs, LCSWs and psychologists.

Extras

Through its Stage 7 program, LGCC offers emergency shelter, wrap around support services and a 24-hour hotline for runaway and homeless youth between the ages of 11 and 17 to provide temporary shelter. In addition, transitional and independent living services are provided for homeless youth between the ages of 16 and 21 in its New Roads Program. New Roads also has a drop-in center which offers food, clothing, showers and other basic needs such as internet and job search materials.

LGCC has three alternative school programs and four residential treatment programs: Pathways (for substance abuse), Intensive Treatment Services (for psychiatric disorders), Parole Revocation Diversion (for juvenile offenders) and Stepping Stone (for teens exhibiting criminal behavior).

In Summary

Looking Glass Counseling Center offers comprehensive treatment for adolescents struggling with substance abuse along with help and support for the entire family. Its outpatient program helps youth not only heal addiction and improve behavior, but also learn how to form healthy attachments to care-givers and mentors. Looking Glass Counseling Center might be an ideal option for youth who would benefit from the trust-building and that results from intensive one-on-one therapy.
