The Basics
Longbranch Healthcare is a New Orleans, Louisiana based care network with residential and outpatient services for adults. The outpatient treatment, known as Longbranch Wellness, is provided in Old Metairie in a brand new facility that offers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for addiction and co-occurring disorders. Programming is comprehensive and clients experience a spa-like atmosphere while participating in 12-step recovery along with group and individual therapy within a structured and supportive environment.
Longbranch was originally conceived by founder and CEO Chris McMahon who struggled with his own addiction to prescription opioids for over 17 years. When he got clean he recognized the need for private, upscale treatment facilities in the New Orleans area that would still allow for clients to stay close to home.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient treatment is a common step-down from the residential track located in Abita Springs, though there isn’t a requirement for incoming clients to have gone through the inpatient program prior to admission. The facility is brand new and offers a coffee bar with Starbucks coffee products that clients can enjoy. Treatment is aimed at clients who are struggling with all types of addictions, including alcohol, methamphetamines and opioids. Programming is holistic but also uses evidence-based approaches along with any medications needed. Both the Longbranch residential and outpatient tracks are overseen by Dr. Arwen Podesta, who is a board certified addiction specialist and psychiatrist with several years of experience working in this field.
Clients have individualized treatment goals and attend outpatient programming between one and three days a week on average. During their assessment process it’s determined what level of care would be needed and how often they would be in treatment. There are group sessions offered every day and frequent individual sessions. There are also regular meetings with the medical staff to monitor medications. Treatment schedules are fairly flexible to allow for clients to work around their personal lives.
Programming focuses on trauma-informed care, relapse prevention, coping skills and support groups like AA, NA and SMART Recovery. The staff members are all sober themselves, which can offer an extra layer of comfort for the client knowing they are in good company. There is also an element of psychoeducation at the wellness center where clients learn about the progressive disease of addiction.
Between the two facilities there is a fairly large staff of over 50. The outpatient location has CADCs, LPCs and RNs on staff.

The idea behind Longbranch Healthcare was born out of the realization that more and more people are becoming addicted to opioids because of medical reasons, and this network of treatment facilities has answered the call for the community of New Orleans.
