Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health CenterLloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center Review

The Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center is part of Meharry Medical College, the first medical school for African Americans to open in the South. The Mental Health Center, founded in 1971, was named in honor of Dr. Lloyd C. Elam, a heralded psychiatrist and Meharry College’s sixth President. The Elam Center offers detox, residential rehabilitation, and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) services for psychiatric disorders and substance abuse.

Accommodations and Food

The Mental Health Center itself is a brick office building, smack in the middle of the Meharry College campus in Downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Men and women sleep in segregated dorm-like spaces, sharing bedrooms and bathrooms. Three meals a day are provided in the cafeteria. Meharry’s Fitness Center, available to clients and staff, is housed in the same building. Elam residential clients are comfortably sequestered in the Meharry College bubble, but the Mental Health Center sees a lot of traffic every day, so the vibe is more hospital-like than home-like.

Treatment and Staff

The length of detox at the Lloyd C. Elam Mental Health Center is determined by medical need. Clients are encouraged to pursue the 28-day residential treatment program. There are separate treatment tracks for men, women and adolescents, and dual diagnosis support is available within each of these groups. The center has approximately 70 staff—LADCs, CSWs, and clinicians—to manage each. Clients spend their days in group and individual therapy. The addiction treatment program at the Elam Center does not push any particular track to recovery, 12-step or otherwise. The “Rainbow” program employs staff specializing in addiction and post-natal care to oversee pregnant and postpartum patients. Women in the Rainbow program receive childcare support, family counseling and transportation assistance. Elam also runs an IOP between 9 am and 12 pm, four days a week. Clients typically stay in outpatient for eight weeks.

The Llyod C. Elam Center is one of only a few Nashville treatment facilities to provide residential beds for young children. They are also attune to the high price of treatment and can be accommodating about payment for those with concerns about cost. They accept Medicaid and military insurance.

In Summary

Because of their inception as part of a medical facility, it’s no surprise that the Lloyd C. Elam Center specializes in treating clients with co-occurring disorders like depression, PTSD, bipolar, borderline, anxiety and OCD. They also believe that education about addiction is of the utmost importance, and that clients should invest time in building a new sober life rather than transitioning immediately back to their “real” lives.
