Livonia Counseling Center Review

With detox and residential treatment located in Canton, and outpatient services just miles away in Livonia, Livonia Counseling Center has been serving the residents of Wayne County and most of southeast Michigan, since 1987. Adults suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders are supported in a structured treatment environment using evidence-based practices, supplemented with the 12 steps.

Accommodations and Food

Oakdale, the residential treatment facility, is located in Canton just south of Detroit. This rambling, two story building is separated from the road by several pine trees and a sprawling lawn, with plenty of room between the facility and neighboring houses. The structure resembles a park and recreation center, with lots of windows and a clean façade.

Oakdale is a 42-bed co-ed facility with two to four clients in a room, each with its own bathroom. Rooms are furnished with twin beds and nightstands, with shared dressers and closets. The facility also has group counseling rooms, administrative offices, a TV room and a dining hall. There are laundry facilities on-site, which clients can use during assigned times.

All meals are catered from a local eatery and there’s fruit and protein bars offered after dinner.

Cell phones and personal electronics are not permitted, but smoking is allowed in designated areas during specified breaks.

Treatment and Staff

Many clients start treatment in detox, where a licensed physician and registered nurses administer pain and comfort meds when necessary. Detox typically lasts from three to five days, and during this time, detoxing clients mix with people in the residential program.

The residential program lasts for an additional 28 days, where clients remain on the grounds for their entire treatment stay. Each client has a schedule based on an initial assessment that consists of daily group therapy and weekly individual sessions. Dual diagnosis residents also see a psychiatrist weekly.

Breakfast is at 7 am and groups start at 9 am. Group therapy topics include addiction studies, coping skills and relapse prevention. Clients with co-occurring disorders attend groups specific to their diagnosis—topics include depression and anxiety, anger management and stress reduction techniques. There are also gender-specific groups for certain topics. Lunch is at noon and groups resume at 1 pm. Free time is from 3:30 until dinner at 5:30 pm. On-site 12-step meetings are held three nights per week. A general process group takes place on Monday nights and Thursday evenings are reserved for gender-specific process groups.

Licensed substance abuse counselors or Master’s-level therapists utilizing CBT facilitate all groups. While family members and approved visitors can visit on Sundays, Livonia does not have a family program.

The residential treatment team consists of registered nurses, a psychiatrist, a physician, licensed substance abuse counselors and Master’s-level therapists. The client-to-staff ratio is six-to-one.

Once clients graduate from the residential program, they have the option of joining the Livonia Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which is for adults 18 and over and runs for five weeks. Clients attend groups and educational sessions Mondays thorough Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm. Groups are assigned according to need, but topics include relapse prevention, family systems, addiction studies and coping skills. There are also dual diagnosis groups and process groups. The regular outpatient program is individual therapy only, where clients meet with their counselors weekly. The duration of outpatient treatment is based on the client’s progress and severity of addiction.

All outpatient clients are encouraged to attend outside 12-step meetings for continued support. While there is no family program, referrals are made for relatives or significant others who may want support or counseling.

In Summary

Livonia Counseling Center provides structured and contained treatment—residential clients don’t have to worry about the temptations of the outside world until treatment is over, because they aren’t allowed off the grounds. If 28 days proves to be too short, they can choose to remain in treatment on an outpatient level. This is no frills treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders, provided by a team of professionals.
