The Basics
Treating both adults and adolescents, Living Proof Recovery Center has been offering an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in the San Gabriel Valley since 1994. Located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in Monrovia, California, Living Proof Recovery Center provides an intimate setting in the hopes of allowing clients to feel the safety and trust required to begin recovery.
Treatment and Staff
Living Proof is located in a mixed commercial and residential neighborhood in the center of Monrovia. The exterior resembles a two-story home, with a welcoming green awning that helps distinguish it from other businesses in the area. IOP is the only option for adults and adolescents. The adult IOP is 12 weeks long and clients attend group therapy nine hours per week. Groups are held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am until noon or from 6 to 9 pm. Individual therapy is not required but sessions may be scheduled based on the initial assessment.
The majority of treatment happens in a group therapy setting. Group topics include addiction studies, dealing with triggers, goals group, coping with stress and grief and loss group. Those with co-occurring disorders may be assigned to depression and anxiety groups and, if appropriate, individual therapy. Living Proof uses CBT and offers gender-specific groups for sensitive topics. A licensed substance abuse counselor facilitates each group, and group size is limited to 10 participants. Outside support through 12-step programs is not mandatory, but is strongly encouraged; the staff recommends that clients attend at least three 12-step meetings a week and begin working with sponsors before completing treatment.
The adolescent program is also 12 weeks long, but clients attend groups three times per week for two hours (instead of three) each time, along with family group on Saturday. As with adult IOP, individual therapy is not included but sessions may be scheduled if needed. Group discussion topics include peer pressure, addiction studies, relapse prevention, communication strategies, self-esteem and having fun sober.
The treatment team at Living Proof consists of CSACs and LCSWs. While those with co-occurring disorders are treated, medications cannot be prescribed; Living Proof does, however, offer psychiatric referrals to clients in need.
Extras
Saturday is family group for adolescent clients and their families. The first hour is reserved for family education and the second hour for family process group.
In Summary
Living Proof Recovery Center offers what looks like a pretty standard IOP—12 weeks in two or three hour sessions is an average amount of time for IOP clients to spend in treatment. The pluses are that the staff is well qualified and happy to answer any questions from prospective clients.
