The Living CenterThe Living Center Review

The Living Center prides itself on offering empathetic and thorough inpatient treatment to clients at its facility in Fresno, California. The staff consists of mostly addicts in recovery, which The Living Center believes is essential to creating an honest space for healing.

Accommodations and Food

The Living Center’s clients live in a modest, residential home that holds a maximum of 16 residents. Bedrooms, which have twin beds and limited storage space, are shared and residents have access to a common area as well as a television.

Clients eat three home-cooked meals a day while at The Living Center. A typical dinner may be beef, a baked potato and a salad or pasta with meatballs.

Treatment and Staff

At The Living Center, residents receive holistic, systematic treatment that prioritizes making residents feel comfortable and safe. Client testimonials commend the counselors and the individual and group therapy for their lack of pretension and sense of warmth. Treatment includes a medically supervised detox if necessary.

Residents attend about nine hours of treatment per day consisting of individual therapy, group therapy, on-site 12-step meetings, relapse prevention, vocational training (they can arrange classes at a local community college for those who stay longer than a month), recreational therapy (mostly walking, but they can bring in a personal trainer every so often for residents) and seminars covering such subjects as parenting education and drug and alcohol education. Specific treatment is available for pregnant women and includes education about substance abuse and pregnancy, HIV/AIDS transmission, child development and supportive role modeling. Residents also engage in life skills training by completing daily chores around the house such as helping clean up in the kitchen after meals or sweeping.

A typical day begins with a 7 am wake-up, followed by breakfast and group therapy from 9 am to 12 pm. After lunch, residents continue group therapy from 1 pm to 4 pm (possibly taking a break for an individual session). They then have a short break, dinner and possibly a 12-step meeting or a Celebrate Recovery meeting. Lights out usually falls between 10 and 11 pm.

Staff includes a house manager, licensed counselors (most of whom are in recovery themselves), administrative staff and a senior resident (a client in the later stages of treatment who begins taking on more responsibility by helping residents in the earlier stages). The staff-to-resident ratio is about one-to-two, and staff are present 24 hours a day.

Extras

The Living Center encourages visitation and family counseling on Thursdays and Sundays to help parents, siblings or significant others understand the disease of addiction and become educated about recovery and their role in their loved one’s battle with addiction.

For those with family obligations or those who simply cannot make residential treatment work, The Living Center offers in-home treatment, during which staff visit a client’s house three times a week for ten weeks.

This program also offers an aftercare program with access to follow up outpatient therapy, referrals to sober living homes, online treatment and further family counseling.

In Summary

The Living Center deserves serious credit for offering nine hours of treatment a day. The emphasis on strong relationships between staff and clients is an additional benefit to seeking help with substance abuse at this facility.
