The Basics
Founded in Miami, Florida in 1999, Little River Recovery House offers sober living for men who are in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. The house serves as an Emergency Housing facility for the Veteran’s Administration housing program and disabled, each residence is equipped with wheelchair ramps.
Accommodations and Amenities
Little River Recovery House has three Mediterranean-style houses, with 45 rooms and a total capacity of 65 beds. One dwelling has a white exterior with brick red trim while the other location includes two large canary yellow houses. The white and red building offers an outside patio area with tables and chairs. Palm trees frame both buildings. Smoking is allowed, at designated outside areas. Clients smoking inside the houses are subject to a $50 fine. for those who have cars, off-street parking is also provided, but the houses are near bus lines for the who use public transportation.
Residents are typically paired in rooms that include a nightstand, lamp, two twin beds, a desk and a small refrigerator. The facility also offers private apartment-style rooms. The furnishings parallel those of the semi-private rooms, except some private rooms include their own kitchens. Other amenities include cable TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a work out area and onsite laundry facilities.
The residences have a common kitchen, common bathrooms and living room area. Residents purchase their own groceries and cook their own meals. Vending machines, which sell soda and snacks, are available at all locations.
Rules and Regulations
Length of stay is typically between six months and a year, but residents must commit to a minimum of a three-month stay, or else they lose their security deposit (which is equivalent to the room’s weekly rate). Little River Recovery House is strictly a sober living facility and offers no transitional care. However, the house emphasizes a 12-step approach and clients must attend 90 meetings in 90 days. To make that easy, Little River Recovery House offers seven NA meetings on the premises. All residents are subject to random drug and alcohol testing, and the house has zero tolerance for those who relapse.
Typically, clients attend meetings and actively search for work (if not already employed) during their stay. Some receive treatment at local outpatient facilities. For those requiring individual therapy, Little River Recovery House refers them to a local Master’s-level mental health counselor.
Clients are assigned household tasks. Those who don’t do their tasks are charged a $10 fine. For the first 30 days, new house members must obey an 11 pm curfew. Typically, the house charges on a weekly basis for rooms. The out-of-pocket 30-day cost for a single room is between $540 and $760, while a 30-day cost for a shared room is $440. In addition, residents are charged a security deposit upon arrival.

Little River Recovery House works closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide subsidized house for veterans. One of their on-site house managers is a disabled veteran and has been with them for over ten years.
Little River Recovery House receives plentiful donations such as food, clothing and other necessities from local businesses, so they can provide those in need with free assistance. Little River Recovery House also helps residents in finding permanent housing, getting their GEDs and applying for government benefits.

The house offers a built-in recovery community with on-site NA meetings, which provide a great foundation for recovery.
