San Pedro CaliforniaLittle Company of Mary Medical Center of San Pedro Review

Founded in 1856, Little Company of Mary Hospital has since folded into the Providence Health and Services of Southern California network. The Little Company of Mary Medical Center of San Pedro offers substance abuse treatment in addition to health and emergency care services. Located in the Los Angeles Harbor, San Pedro is a small community in the South Bay region north of Long Beach in California. The LCMMC scope of treatment includes detox, inpatient and outpatient programs and has been in operation for over 30 years.

Accommodations and Food

The LCMMC facility is comprised of two buildings, one accommodating clients enrolled in the residential treatment program and the other for administration and group therapy sessions. The residential facility is a two story building with a total of 30 beds. Each floor has 15 bedrooms, each with its own private half bath. Rooms are furnished with twin-sized beds with private areas created by a room divider. Each floor is gender-specific, with the top floor reserved for women and the bottom floor for male clients. Each floor has a lounge area with a TV and couches for downtime.

The facility has a two-room gym with equipment for weight training and cardio including treadmills and elliptical machines. A recreation room doubles as the space for eating meals and socializing. Breakfast, lunch and dinner typically includes a mix of healthy and comfort food. An outdoor smoking area with a courtyard and a fountain is available for clients to utilize with staff supervision.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment can begin, all clients must be seen by an intake coordinator for a bio-psycho-social assessment. Money and insurance documents are organized to see what level and length of treatment is suitable for the client’s needs. Clients requiring detox move into the residential facility for treatment which lasts two to five days and includes regular visits with the staff doctor who specializes in addiction medicine. Suboxone is administered by the staff. During detox, clients do not focus on any specific programming but work to get well before moving into treatment.

When clients have completed detox, they either transition to the inpatient track or the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). All treatment follows an individualized plan to accommodate the client’s schedule and acuity of chemical dependency. Length of stay depends on the client and their insurance limitations, with the average duration being 21 days. The cornerstone of treatment is group therapy facilitated daily. Clients attend individual therapy with a counselor a minimum of once per week.

The PHP track runs from the morning until the early evening so that clients may return home at the end of the day. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is the next step down from PHP, allowing clients to return back to work and home responsibilities. IOP is facilitated Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with both morning and evening hours. All programs offer dual diagnosis support through the behavioral health department of LCMMC.

Clients must attend 12-step meetings throughout the week once they transition home to develop external support outside of treatment.

A staff of doctors, nurses and mental health professionals are available to assist clients with their unique needs. All treatment is facilitated by CADCs and Master’s-level therapists. Therapy methods range, but primarily focus on evidence-based practices with CBT and DBT techniques.

Extras

Family programs are available through LCMMC that include Alanon support groups and gender-specific groups for friends and loved ones of clients. Families may attend a family support group on weekends or attend the 12-step support meetings.

Every Tuesday morning, an alumni meeting is held with current clients in attendance to offer support and networking. The facility hosts Hospitals and Institutions meetings through AA/NA fellowships as well as eating disorder support groups. Every week religious sermons are facilitated by volunteers as well.

In Summary

The Little Company of Mary Medical Center offers a continuum of substance abuse care with detox, inpatient, an IOP and PHP. The clinical staff at LCMMC work to provide a comfortable environment for clients to begin and continue their recovery journeys. Many 12-step support group and faith oriented services are integrated into treatment as well as support for the family unit while the individual is in the process of recovery.
