Linwood House Review
Located an hour east of Manchester in the town of Barnsley, the Linwood House is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of adult clients struggling with addictions to a range of substances including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, opiates and prescription drugs. Accredited by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), Linwood is one of the largest treatment facilities in the United Kingdom, providing detox and residential programming for up to 34 clients at a time. Founded in 2006, Linwood promotes the mind-body-spirit oriented treatment that is customized to the individual. Accommodations and Food
Located halfway between Leeds and Sheffield in the large town of Barnsley, Linwood House is situated in a classic colonial estate in the British countryside. Surrounded by gardens, the house is equipped with a spacious floor plan, several communal lounges with flat screen TVs, therapy rooms, sitting rooms and outdoor patios for relaxing.
The secure detox unit is on the upper floor and can accommodate 20 clients. The main floor is home to the residential unit. With only 14 residents at a time, the environment is communal without sacrificing privacy. Clients have their own private bedroom equipped with a twin or full-sized bed, dresser, plenty of natural sunlight and an en suite bathroom. Residential clients have access to the estate grounds, dining area and laundry.
Linwood seeks to create an atmosphere free of distraction, where clients can focus completely on their recovery. To this end, residents are only permitted the use of mobile phones between 7 and 9 pm while in the detox unit, and between 5 and 10 pm on weekdays and 1 and 10 pm on weekends for those in the residential phase. In addition, guests are allowed to visit on weekends after the client has been in treatment for 10 days. Clients in the residential phase enjoy occasional outings and home visits.
Residents enjoy nutritious meals freshly prepared by the on-site culinary team. Dietary restrictions and preferences can be accommodated, and healthy snacks are always available.
Treatment and Staff
The Linwood House believes in treating the underlying causes of addiction rather than the symptoms, and fostering the individual empowerment needed to achieve a successful sustainable recovery. Before entering treatment at Linwood, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment by the on-site general practitioner that includes a complete medical and drug history. This evaluation helps the staff create the most effective treatment plan tailored to the specific needs of the individual. If necessary, clients enter a medical detox program that includes medication to ease withdrawal symptoms, regular therapy and around-the-clock medical supervision. While the length of detox varies depending on the substance, an alcohol detox typically lasts between seven and 10 days and a drug detox between 14 and 28 days. Upon completion, clients typically enter the residential program.
The length of residential treatment varies depending on the needs, progress and circumstances of the individual. Treatment lengths range from a few weeks to several months. The residential treatment is designed specifically for clients struggling with an array of addictions including alcohol, prescription drugs, heroin and cocaine. Linwood utilizes an individualized treatment approach that integrates several therapeutic methods including 12-step recovery, evidence-based models like CBT, individual and group therapy, art therapy and auricular acupuncture. Residents engage in up to four therapy sessions a day.
The Linwood House team is comprised of a general practitioner, therapists, social workers, addiction specialists, mental health counselors and a nursing team. Medication management is available.

Linwood House believes that aftercare is an integral component to the success of a sustainable long-term recovery. To this end, the facility provides 12 months of free aftercare to clients that have completed the residential phase. Programming includes monthly workshops on relapse prevention and family sessions.
