naperville illinoisThe Basics

Linden Oaks Behavioral Health is the addiction and mental health services unit at Edward-Elmhurst Health located in Naperville, Illinois. The facility offers a continuum of care including detox, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). The outpatient facility offers programs to adults and adolescents in need of substance abuse recovery or dual diagnosis support. Treatment combines 12-step principles with evidence-based modalities like CBT, DBT, occupational therapy as well as some non-traditional methods like animal-assisted therapy and poetry therapy.

Treatment and Staff

Upon beginning treatment at Linden Oaks, clients are assessed to determine a proper level of care. Those in need of detox can be medically monitored at the hospital’s main campus. Psychiatric medication management is also available for those in need.

PHP has four separate tracks divided into adult and adolescent addiction and dual-diagnosis treatment groups. The adult groups meet separately Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm and on Saturdays from 8:15 to 11:30 am.  Adolescents groups meet Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 2 pm.

IOP is also separated by age and dual-diagnosis. The adolescent IOP groups are offered Monday through Friday from 7:30 to 10:45 am. Adults in the addiction IOP meet mornings, Monday through Saturday from 8:30 to 11:45 am, and evenings, Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Dual-diagnosis IOP for adults is only available mornings, Monday through Saturday.

Each program consists of daily group therapy with less frequent individual and family sessions. During group, those in the chemical dependency programs are taught communication skills, control of negative thoughts, anger and stress management. These issues are addressed through a variety of evidence-based techniques as well as creative interventions like poetry therapy, which involves expressing feelings through writing poems and journaling. Those in the dual-diagnosis programs cover topics such as anxiety, depression, coping skills, personality and mood disorders. There are on-site 12-step meetings that all clients are encouraged to attend as part of the continuing care portion of treatment. Staff is made up of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and CADCs.

Extras

Aside from treatment for addiction and co-occurring disorders, Edward Elmhurst Health also has inpatient treatment, PHP and IOP for eating disorders. Programs are catered to adults and adolescents 13 years and older. Treatment includes group therapy, nutrition classes and exercise counseling.

Other mental health services are also available for clients of all ages through an anxiety treatment program, consisting of group and individual therapy with educational classes—focusing on phobias, PTSD and panic disorders. Adolescents receive therapy to alleviate anxiety in academic and social settings. There is also an outpatient program for adolescents with Asperger’s Syndrome or mood disorders, which meet every weekday morning.

Mental health support for seniors is available through inpatient and outpatient programs, which include small group therapy and art, music and animal-assisted therapy. Counselors aim to discuss issues of aging and loneliness. The outpatient program, The Wellness for Independent Seniors Everyday (WISE), meets four times a week for an hour at a time. PHP and IOP for clients with self-harm issues are also available.

Edward Elmhurst Health also has an educational program called Mental Health First Aid, which focuses on teaching people how to help those struggling with mental health issues— a great resource for families. The facility also has a crisis response team that includes 20 members who have extensive experience in outreach support. These services can be activated over the crisis phone line 24/7.
